The Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology is a unique academic research unit within the School of Anthropology at the University of Arizona. BARA’s mission is to place anthropology at the service of contemporary society, prepare the next generation of professional anthropologists, advance knowledge of the human condition, and address the pressing issues of local communities. BARA faculty and affiliates carry out research, teaching, and outreach activities within Arizona, throughout the country, and internationally.

The Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology at the University of Arizona is seeking an early-career Anthropologist / Archaeologist who is engaged in Applied Research in North America in one or more of the following areas: renewable and non-renewable resources; migration, environmental health, or food security in the borderlands; or Native American / grassroots heritage preservation. We seek a professional whose region of interest complements or expands those of BARA faculty; who can travel and work at off-campus project locations in Arizona, elsewhere in the United States, and in Canada or Mexico; who can interact with members of research communities in a productive and ethical manner; and who can work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Duties & Responsibilities

•Will co-manage existing projects and travel to project sites to conduct field work
•Will participate in data collection, analysis, and the reporting of research findings
•Will work directly with community leaders and community-based organizations
•Will supervise graduate and/or undergraduate students in campus and field settings
•Will actively seek research funding
•Will attend at least one professional conference per calendar year to develop a professional network and meet potential sponsors/partners

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

•PhD in Anthropology or related field of study
•Background in applied anthropology
•Research experience in ethnography and/or ethnoarchaeology
•Evidence of successful publication in a peer-reviewed journal or an edited volume, or evidence of authorship of a technical report
•A record of successful funding (e.g., NSF Dissertation Improvement Grant, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, Wenner-Gren Field Research Grant, Federal/State/Tribal research grant or contract, College/University research grants)
•A record of participation in research projects at a university or research institute

Preferred Qualifications

•Graduate-level knowledge of human ecology, environment and natural resources, or related fields – OR –
Graduate-level knowledge of health disparities, food and nutrition, or related fields – OR –
Graduate-level knowledge of Native American ethnohistory, ethnography, or archaeology
•Basic experience with Google Earth Pro and/or GIS and satellite imagery
•Experience in the training and supervision of students or other personnel
• PhD in Anthropology or related field of study was received within the past 5 years
