Position Summary

The Division of Art History in the University of Arizona’s School of Art invites applications for the position of assistant professor, tenure-track, with a research specialty in art of the Americas (Latin American, Native American, Chicanx, Latinx, or other related fields). We welcome candidates with a possible secondary field in modern and contemporary photographic practices and/or new media. We especially encourage applicants from groups historically underrepresented in academia toward our goal of increasing the diversity of our course offerings, and of our faculty.

The University of Arizona is a Research I institution. The standard teaching load is 2/2. The successful candidate will develop innovative curriculum at all levels, from general education survey courses to graduate seminars in their areas of expertise. Faculty teach and mentor undergraduate majors, MA and Museum Studies students, and PhD candidates in Art History. Faculty also regularly serve on the committees of studio MFA students. We envision that this candidate’s contributions will complement the program’s existing strengths, and help shape its future direction.The Division of Art History in the University of Arizona’s School of Art supports Inclusive Excellence, the university’s diversity strategic initiative designed to engage the entire university in implementing and practicing diversity and inclusiveness. There are also many academic programs, interdisciplinary research centers and cultural institutions that might complement the candidate’s area of specialization including Latin American Studies, American Indian Studies, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies.

The School of Art, part of the College of Fine Arts, comprises the Divisions of Art History, Art and Visual Culture Education, Photography, 2D, 3D & Extended Media, Illustration & Design, and First Year Experience. With 36 tenured/tenure track faculty and 12 staff and appointed professionals, the School of Art serves approximately 500 undergraduate Art majors, 193 Art minors, 87 graduate students, and offers BA, BFA, MA, MFA and PhD degrees.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Actively publish and present research. Develop a national/international reputation as required for progress toward promotion and tenure.
• Teach, advise, and mentor students in the BA/BFA, MA/MFA and PhD programs and in university general education courses.
• Supervise graduate theses.
• Undertake service responsibilities within the Division, School, College and University, and contribute service in the community and nationally/internationally.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

• PhD in Art History or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment
• Demonstrated potential for research excellence
• Ability to teach courses at all levels in the Art History curriculum

Preferred Qualifications

• Record of publications and scholarly presentations
• Prior teaching experience at the university level
• Ability to teach undergraduate global art histories
• Experience in developing innovative approaches to curriculum, pedagogy and research
• Demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and scholarship
