The Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics (CEEM) at The University of Arizona invites applications for the Department Head position. With the rapidly changing technologies and increasing interest in multi-disciplinary perspectives in shaping future cities, civil engineers are facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities in the decades to come. The future CEEM Department Head must be an innovative and visionary academic leader who can take the helm and spearhead the continuing transformation of the CEEM department for the challenges of the 21st century. The Department Head is responsible for managing a dynamic department which includes a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, as well as a number of modern teaching and research laboratories and other facilities. Candidates are expected to have extensive research and teaching experience at a level sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured Full Professor. A candidate with accomplishments in administrative leadership and team-building is preferred.

The CEEM department is recognized for both its teaching and research, offering BS (ABET accredited), MS, ME, and PhD degrees in several civil engineering disciplines, including structural engineering, hydraulics engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering and engineering mechanics. Currently the department has 12 full time tenured and tenure-track faculty, three non-tenured faculty, several adjuncts professors, four research faculty, four staff members, approximately 137 undergraduate, and 45 graduate students. The department has had nearly $10M in research expenditures over the past five years. The graduate program in CEEM is ranked among the top 40 Civil Engineering programs nationwide, and The University of Arizona is ranked among the top 25 of public research universities nationwide. CEEM faculty members conduct cutting-edge research in the areas of intelligent transportation systems, active traffic management, sustainable design, sensor networks and monitoring, earthquake engineering, municipal water planning, arid lands, and others. Several faculty member’s research involves technology transfer.

The department has been advancing its educational innovations in the past three years with several exciting new initiatives, including an emphasis on active learning in the classroom. At the undergraduate level, the department recently started the Construction Engineering Management emphasis, combining the business of construction with the technical side of engineering through classes, seminars and extracurricular activities. A new Architectural Engineering program has been recently approved which will start recruiting new undergraduate students fall 2017. A 2+2 program is established with Central South University in China. The Certificate to Master’s Program (CMP) with two distinguished Chinese universities just kicked off this year, increasing graduate student enrollment and the visibility of the CEEM program worldwide. In addition, the department joined a Dual Degree Partnership Program between the University of Arizona and the American University of Phnom Penh (AUPP). All of these new initiatives are expected to increase our undergraduate and graduate enrollments dramatically.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide vision and leadership to continue and enhance the CEEM Department’s reputation and distinction in the field;
  • In conjunction with faculty, develop and promote educational plans reflective of the needs of students;
  • Act entrepreneurially in managing, stabilizing and enhancing the department’s financial condition through increasing enrollments and initiating new programs that capitalize on the responsibility centered management funding model and other revenue streams;
  • Implement burgeoning initiatives in architectural engineering bachelor’s degree, international dual degree programs, international Accelerated Master’s Program, online graduate programs, and in-state 3 + 1 Bachelor’s degree options;
  • Identify and promote research opportunities and actively facilitate and participate in interdisciplinary research;
  • Continue and energize collaborations with alumni and the civil engineering and construction communities, to address their needs and to connect industry with students and students with industry;
  • Improve communications with various CEEM constituencies through presentations, newsletters, website and other media;
  • Work with the College of Engineering and their development office to enhance philanthropic support for programs, laboratories, scholarships, and research;
  • Establish and improve ties with industry with respect to funded research such as laboratory testing and participation on research teams;
  • Oversee the department’s operations including budgets, resources, fiscal management, and ABET accreditation;
  • Foster a sense of community for students, alumni, staff and faculty;
  • Plan for and supervise faculty recruitment, development, and promotion;
  • Mentor faculty, staff, and students, including those from underrepresented groups;
  • Create an inclusive, positive workplace environment;
  • Support and practice Inclusive Excellence to increase diversity and inclusiveness on campus;
  • Teach engaging courses.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated administrative experience and skills.
Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a distinguished record of achievement in scholarship, research, and/or professional practice commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure. The candidate should also demonstrate effective managerial leadership, clear communication, and a commitment to diversity, shared governance, and community engagement.

  • PhD in Civil Engineering or related field;
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching, including an on-going research program;
  • Demonstrated record of leadership experience;
  • Previous experience advising PhD students;
  • Research record appropriate for appointment at the rank of Full Professor in CEEM.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous administrative experience as head or associate head, center director, or equivalent leadership position;
  • Membership on boards of academic journals and/or professional associations;
  • Experience with online programs;
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding;
  • Skills necessary to perform as an effective communicator to internal and external constituencies;
  • Commitment to participatory decision making processes.
  • The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of engagement with diversity issues, diverse students, women in engineering, and other diversity-related faculty, staff, and student communities.
