Position Summary

The University of Arizona, College of Medicine – Phoenix is seeking a Medical Director for the center for Simulation & Innovation. Under the direction of the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, the Medical Director will define and lead the Center for Simulation and Innovation’s mission and guide the teaching, research and revenue generating goals. Qualified candidates must be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the Associate or Full Professor rank. Candidates should have a history of, with expectations to continue, an academic clinical practice. The FTE for this position is to be determined, with no less than 0.50 FTE responsibilities in the Center for Simulation and Innovation at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix and up to a full 1.0 FTE depending on clinical responsibilities with our Affiliate Hospitals.

The Center for Simulation and Innovation at the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix is a state-of-the-art, technology-driven, clinical simulation training facility supporting the innovative educational needs of the medical school and its clinical affiliates, including industry health care partners and the community. This facility is dedicated, in every sense, to providing truly experiential, innovative and immersive simulation education. With 33,000 square feet of dedicated space, the Center for Simulation and Innovation represents one of the largest simulation facilities housed within a university in the U.S. and is a flagship for the University of Arizona and the downtown Phoenix Biomedical Campus.

The center supports tens of thousands of learning contact hours each year to fulfill the needs of its primary educational constituents and partners. Simulation-based training is integrated into every block and clerkship in the four-year medical school curriculum. The center educates 320 medical students in hundreds of simulation-based training events, which can be as small as three students to as large as 160. UA College of Medicine – Phoenix curricular simulation-based training occurs every week of the academic calendar. Other activity within its primary scope includes simulation and training for NAU (Physician Assistant/Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy); Banner Health education for Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); and resident training for a host of Phoenix-area affiliate hospitals.

Duties & Responsibilities

Defines and directs the strategic vision and mission for the Center for Simulation and Innovation to guide the teaching, research and revenue-generating goals for the Center.

  • Monitors the Center’s milestones and performance metrics to evaluate the program delivery and assess allocation of resources and areas for growth and improvement.
  • Approves Center business and marketing plans that generate revenue producing programs and services.

Provides medical expertise and direction in the development and design of the simulation curriculum for undergraduate medical education and graduate medical education by employing teaching methods to satisfy the program’s goals and objectives in achievement of student competencies.

  • Represents the college/department and serves on various department and university committees to guide activities of the Center.
  • Works closely with Associate Dean, Curricular Affairs and Program Evaluation and Associate Dean, Clinical Curriculum to ensure effective utilization of Simulation across the curriculum.
  • Directs and approves the development, scheduling, implementation, evaluation and revision of Simulation curriculum.
  • Oversees the annual creation of the Simulation calendar in coordination with the Operational Director, Simulation Curriculum Co-Directors, relevant committees, staff and faculty.
  • Oversees the process for schedule and case changes in coordination with the Operational Director, Simulation Curriculum Co-Directors, relevant committees, staff and faculty.
  • Reviews evaluation of simulation activities over the curriculum to provide guidance on measured effectiveness of these programs. Provides guidance on future programming, identifies opportunities for improvement, innovation, implementation and integration of patient simulation technology.
  • Acts as an advisor on technical and procedural elements of the Simulation Center.
  • Identifies and submits extramural grant/partnership funding.
  • Supervises and reviews research activities through collaboration on innovative ideas, designs studies and reports the results.

Oversees the management, engagement & training of Faculty and Staff.

  • Manages the Operational Director of the Center to ensure successful delivery of Simulation Center goals.
  • Works with the Operational Director to develop a sustainable staffing structure.
  • Ensures that the Simulation Co-Curricular Directors work with block and clerkship directors with developing goals, learning objective and assessment tools.
  • Works with the Co-Curriculum Directors to recruit, onboard and engage volunteer and paid Faculty to work as Simulation Instructors.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Faculty Development to develop programs and training to orient the faculty to the COM-P simulation curriculum standards.

Acts as liaison with faculty, advisors, administrators and staff from both the university and external agencies

  • Work and build relationships and collaboration among support staff, faculty, and administrative leadership across the college, UAHS, university and Phoenix Biomedical Campus.
  • Champions and markets the uniqueness of the Simulation Center to external parties; leverages relationships in the business and cultural community to support COM-Phoenix and UAHS events and activities.
  • Promotes community relations opportunities including implementing/partnering on programs at community events.
  • Collaborate with regional, national and international users and simulation center directors to advance the use of simulation in healthcare education
  • Participate and acts as institutional representative for College at the Association of American Medical College.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Solid working knowledge of the applicability of simulation training to medical student, resident and faculty education.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles of adult education and active learning.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Qualified candidates must possess an MD, DO or equivalent degree from an accredited institution and be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher.
  • Three to five years of progressively complex administrative experience (e.g., program leader, center/section director, etc.) in an academic medical center setting.
  • Demonstrated track record of distinction in teaching, clinical care, and/or research in an academic department of medicine or equivalent environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient care, reflecting a service-oriented, team-based philosophy with hospital administration and health professional colleagues from all disciplines, departments and specialties.
  • A record of solid performance as a skilled manager with the ability to grow revenues, meet budgets, measure and improve productivity and outcomes, and under take appropriate business strategies to achieve division, unit department and/or enterprise goals.
  • Board Certified at the time of appointment.
  • Eligible for license to practice medicine in Arizona.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional health profession degree (e.g., PhD, MPH, MS, etc.).
  • Experience in the development and successful implementation of new academic (educational, patient care, research) programs and services in simulation.
  • Demonstrated experience in academic program development, assessment, program review, and accreditation.
  • Demonstrated experience in a Simulation Center environment.
  • Demonstrated success managing in senior administrator function with oversight of budgets, leaders and operations.
  • Working knowledge of curriculum.
