Position Summary

The Department of Surgery is seeking an Inaugural Division Chief of the Division of Urology. The candidate will be expected to increase the number of faculty and to build and expand the clinical, education, and research components as well as establish an ACGME approved Urology residency. The department is seeking an individual who is able to work with diverse students and colleagues, and who has experience with a variety of teaching methods and curricular perspectives.


The Division Chief of the Division of Urology leads the clinical and academic programs of the Division and also serves as the Executive Director of the Urology Institute at Banner – University Medical Center, Phoenix. The Executive Director provides leadership, vision, and strategic planning for the evolving Urology Institute. Centers within the Urology Institute include: Center for Stones, Center for Reconstructive Urology, Center for Neuro Urology, Center for Female Urology, and Center for Men’s Health. All positions within the Institute are aligned with the integration of complex clinical care with teaching and research to support the vision of the Institute. This position must interface in a hybrid model with outside physicians, paramedical professionals, scientists (both research and clinical), the media and administrators locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. This position plays a leading role in assisting faculty in the administration of research, administrative, and academic programs for the College of Medicine-Phoenix and Banner University Medical Center-Phoenix (BUMC-P).


The successful candidate will be an outstanding, nationally recognized leader with a substantial record of teaching, clinical, and administrative accomplishments in Urology. He or she will have the in-depth knowledge and ability to effectively lead physicians, researchers, and educators while embracing the importance of quality and financial sustainability. Integrity, intellect, the ability to work effectively with numerous stakeholders, and a vision of how Urology will thrive clinically, scientifically and financially in an age of health reform are essential.

This position reports directly to the Department Chair of Surgery.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Oversee and manage the Division’s budgets (all funds), resources and fiscal operations to achieve agreed upon annual performance benchmarks.
  • Provide effective leadership, mentorship, and oversight of the Division’s enterprise strategies and performance to appropriate metrics of success.
  • Attract and retain highly motivated and well-qualified faculty, staff and students to the Division and promote their academic/professional development.
  • Provide effective leadership, mentorship, and oversight of the Division’s training programs for medical students and establish a Urology residency.
  • Strengthen the Department and Divisional development and fundraising efforts by working closely with the UAHS, College of Medicine and UA Foundation to build philanthropic support and relationships with donors and other potential partners across the state, nation and internationally.
  • Champion and serve as the chief spokesperson for the Department and Division internally and externally.
  • Strategically guide, enhance and expand the sponsored research portfolio of the Division.
  • Work closely with program leaders across the University to develop integrated strategies that fulfill the clinical and translational research mission of the Department and Division.
  • Provide direct patient care in the ambulatory and inpatient settings at Banner – University Medicine Center (Phoenix).
  • Work in collaboration with Banner—University Medicine to expand and improve the clinical enterprise to make the Banner—University Medical Center, Phoenix a destination for patients in need of Urologic diagnostic, therapeutic and preventative patient care services and expertise regionally and nationally.
  • Develop cohesive and mutually beneficial relationships with referring and specialty physicians in the Banner—University Medicine primary service areas, throughout Arizona and the greater Southwest.
  • Provide leadership for continual improvement and transformation for optimal care provision of the Division’s ambulatory care delivery system to include monitoring and improving access to care in all practice sites.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctor of medicine (M.D.) degree from an accredited institution and be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor.
  • Board Certified in Urology and eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
  • Minimum eight (8) years of progressively complex administrative experience (e.g., Division/Section Chief, Institute/Center Director, etc.) in an academic medical center setting.
  • Demonstrated track record of distinction in teaching, clinical care, and/or research in an academic department of medicine or equivalent environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient care, reflecting a service-oriented, team-based philosophy with hospital administration and health professional colleagues from all disciplines, departments and specialties.
  • Successful track record of recruitment and development of faculty, trainees, and students.
  • A record of solid performance as a skilled manager with the ability to grow revenues, meet budgets, measure and improve productivity and outcomes, and under take appropriate business strategies to achieve division, unit department and/or enterprise goals.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional health profession degree (e.g., PhD., MBA, MPH, etc.).
  • Experience in the development and successful implementation of new academic (educational, patient care, research) programs and services.
  • Demonstrated experience in academic program development, assessment, program review, and accreditation.
