Position Summary

The Office of Digital Learning is seeking a Visual Designer to join their diverse, high-energy team in the design of fully-online degree programs for UA Online. The Visual Designer will serve as the creative leader and point person for a broad spectrum of digital design work. They will be responsible for creating a wide range of screen-based media content for online courses, as well as layouts for websites and other design projects for the office. This position will work on a cross-functional team of instructional designers, videographers and web developers, creating design elements that help to engage students within fully online courses. These design elements may take the form of images and infographics, presentation layouts, graphics for video and interactive media, as well as mockups to be translated into web layouts by our developers. We are particularly interested in a designer who is familiar with or has a passion for online learning environments. Given our office’s collaborative and dynamic culture, the ideal candidate will feel most creatively inspired by teamwork and will be energized by a diverse and varied collection of design projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Interpret pitches, storyboards and design briefs to help tell visual stories that support learning
• Collaborate with instructional designers, videographer, faculty and subject matter experts to develop visual elements for interactive learning objects, videos and online learning environments
• Design user-centered interaction models, wireframes or screen mockups for online learning that promote interaction, social presence, and community
• Create custom icons, infographics and other design elements for use within the online learning environment
• Source media, to include stock photos and video footage
• Design and edit titles and motion graphics for video segments and as standalone projects
• Work on email marketing items, presentation materials and interactive event materials
• Curate and organize production assets into a component library
• Design within UA Online and UA brand guidelines to create layouts that reinforce a brand’s style or voice through its visual touchpoints
• Juggle multiple projects while effectively managing timelines and expectations
• Closely collaborate with various stakeholders to solve complex design issues
• Keep current on the latest standards, changes, trends in visual design field
• Create styorboards, wireframes, mockups and templates based on specifications, design briefs and needs assessments
• Design and edit a wide variety of graphics, video, and other visual elements for use in learning objects, websites, digital marketing and in online courses
• Organize, curate and tag assets for use in a variety of projects
• Work collaboratively with a team of designers, videographers and other office staff
• Manage multiple projects with ease while still maintaining a close attention to detail

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in visual communications, graphic, interactive, web, digital design, multimedia, fine arts or a related field
• Ability to generate clear ideas, concepts and designs of creative assets from beginning to end
• Well-crafted and curated portfolio that demonstrates a solid foundation in typography, layout and design
• Excellent visual, written and verbal communication skills, along with presentation and negotiation skills
• Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Cloud applications, particularly Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
• Working knowledge of designing assets for different outputs and devices (tablet, mobile and web)
• A penchant for details and organization, including the ability to prioritize tasks, communicate progress, project manage and meet deadlines
• The ability to effectively take direction and work both collaboratively and autonomously

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years professional design experience
• Experience with design for higher education, particularly for online programs
• Proficiency designing visual elements to be used within Microsoft Office products
• Basic coding knowledge (HTML, CSS) to ensure an effective process working hand-in-hand with coders
• Experience with transitions, animation, motion design and dynamic interaction for use by the videography team
• Expertise in Adobe After Effects or Adobe Premiere
• Basic knowledge of instructional design and creating graphics for authoring tools like Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate or Camtasia
• Experience with photography or video editing
