The University of Arizona College of Engineering is seeking a Director of Development to join the Dean and Senior Director of Development for the College and representatives from the University Development Program (UDP) in supporting our efforts to significantly increase philanthropic support and have a positive impact on achieving strategic growth for the College. The Director of Development will lead, direct, and manage development activities for the College of Engineering as part of the College’s development team. The Director of Development works directly with major gift prospects of the College of Engineering to secure gifts of $25,000 or more to further the goals and objectives of the College of Engineering.

This position is jointly managed by the College Engineering and the University Development Program (UDP), which is managed under contract by the University of Arizona Foundation (UAF) as specified in the Development Services and Asset Management Agreement dated August 2016.

The Director of Development will gain an in-depth understanding of the College’s donors and prospective donor pools, as well as the school’s overall fundraising processes, strategies and goals. The person in this role is expected to work collaboratively with all members of the College of Engineering and Administrative team, Department Heads and Directors, and other University of Arizona Foundation (UAF), University Development Programs (UDP) and University of Arizona personnel as appropriate. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to create and sustain personal relationships. The position requires travel on a regular basis throughout Arizona and other regions including overnight stays, in addition to work on evenings and/or weekends as necessary to cultivate and solicit donor prospects.

Duties & Responsibilities

•Helps to support and promote a culture of philanthropy with in the College.
•Actively works with the Dean and Sr. Director of Development for the College of Engineering on matters related to development activities within the College.
•Develop and manage a portfolio of 80-125 assigned donors/prospects with an emphasis on discovering new hi-capacity prospects.
•After an initial 6-month on-boarding period, execute an agreed upon metric of 100+ current or prospect donor visits and presentation of 20+ proposals per year, with an expectation of $1M+ raised after the initial on-boarding period (with incremental increases after the first year).
•Maintain up-to-date donor/prospect portfolio, including contact reports and proposals.
•Develop and execute strategic, personalized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans for assigned major donors and prospects (individual, corporate, and foundation) through personal visits, letters, phone calls, email and other methods.
•Identifies, qualifies, cultivates, solicits and provides stewardship to selected major gift donors and prospects in consultation with the Senior Director of Development and Alumni Affairs.
•Actively work with the Dean and Department Heads in the College of Engineering in expanding, cultivating and growing philanthropic support through their advisory boards and alumni.
•Is expected to devote 70 percent effort to major gift fundraising and 30 percent to management and administrative tasks.
•Work with College Marketing and Communication team to develop and oversee the creation of materials in support of fundraising efforts in support of College initiatives.
•Work with College colleagues to strengthen ties to industrial and commercial supporters of the College.
•Provide oversight an annual giving program with a national outreach to support college goals.
•Stewardship of assigned prospects.
•Work effectively as part of the greater University Development Program (UDP) as defined in the Development Services and Asset Management Agreement between the University of Arizona and the University of Arizona Foundation.
•Develop an annual fundraising plan that has specific objectives with regard to funding priorities, number of face-to-face visits with donors, and amounts to be solicited during the course of the year.
•Supervise, monitor and coordinate the activity of team members, including professional and classified staff.
•Work cooperatively with UA Foundation central and executive staff.
•Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Ability to work in a team environment with College and Department faculty and staff, academic and administrative staff members.
• Excellent initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
• Understanding of the educational and professional needs of engineering.
• Ability to establish and maintain powerful relationships with donors, development colleagues and UA faculty and staff members.
• Ability to maintain donor confidentiality.
• Ability to make policy decisions when necessary.
Ability to motivate and manage individuals for maximum performance.
• Excellent writing, presentation and communication skills.
• Knowledge of gift solicitation and planned giving techniques and the programs available to implement such gifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university program.
• Three to five (3-5) years of development experience or appropriate transferable skills..
• Demonstrated knowledge of development and fundraising principles and procedures, with emphasis on cultivating and closing major gifts.
• Experience working with volunteers, faculty, staff and students.
• A valid driver’s license is required upon employment and the ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

•Fund-raising experience in higher education.
•Knowledge of the unique opportunities and challenges of working with an Engineering college and its many constituents.
•Demonstrated success in planning organizing, and managing fund-raising campaigns.
•Experience building advisory boards and committee structures.
