Position Summary

The Eller College of Management, the highly ranked business school of the University of Arizona, seeks a motivated and ambitious professional to join the Dean and development team in support of our efforts to significantly increase private support and to have a positive impact on achieving strategic growth for the Eller College. The Director of Development will assist the Senior Director of Development and other members of the Eller College development team in the planning and implementation of all development activities. In addition, the position works directly with major gift prospects of the College to secure gifts to further the goals and objectives of the Eller College. The Director of Development will focus on gifts of $25,000 and greater.

This position is jointly managed by the Eller College of Management and the University Development Program (UDP), which is managed under contract by the University of Arizona Foundation (UAF) as specified in the Development Services and Asset Management Agreement dated August 2016.

The Director of Development will develop an in-depth understanding of the school’s donor and prospective donor pools, as well as the school’s overall fundraising processes, strategies, and goals. The Director is expected to work collaboratively with all members of the College External Relations Team, Department and Program Heads, and other College, University of Arizona Foundation (UAF) and University of Arizona (UA) and administrative offices as appropriate. Successful candidates will have excellent interpersonal relationship skills, the ability to create and sustain personal relationships, and the ability to adapt quickly and confidently to changing priorities. The positions require travel on a regular basis throughout Arizona and other regions including overnight stays.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Dean of the Eller College, members of the Eller College development team and the University of Arizona Foundation to establish fundraising priorities and create funding opportunities for projects and programs in support of the Eller College strategic plan.
  • Work toward building and managing a major gift prospect/donor portfolio of at least 100 individuals, corporations and foundations by identifying and qualifying new major donor prospects nationally.
  • Develop personalized strategies for all assigned donors and prospects that build, maintain and enhance relationships with the Eller College while furthering their philanthropic objectives.
  • Execute strategic cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans for assigned donors and prospects (individual, corporate and foundation) through personal visits, letters, phone calls and other methods.
  • Work with other members of the Eller College development team to plan and execute special event and recognition activities, including volunteer recruitment, organization, and training.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

•Understanding of and interest in issues pertaining to business and economics.
Ability to create and lead comprehensive fundraising campaigns.
• Ability to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gift donors.
• Ability to build boards and committee structures.
• Ability to write successful proposals, grants, and reports.
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain powerful relationships.
• Ability to translate technical scientific information into lay language for potential donors.
• Ability to understand and work with budgetary procedures and policies.
• Ability to motivate and manage individuals for maximum performance.
• Ability to work with academic and administration staff members.
• Knowledge of planned giving techniques and the programs available to implement such gifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university program.
• Three to five (3-5) years of development experience or appropriate transferable skills.
• Demonstrated knowledge of development and fundraising principles and procedures, with emphasis on cultivating and closing major gifts.
• Experience working with volunteers, faculty, staff and students.
• A valid driver’s license is required upon employment and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Development experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience with planned giving.
  • Experience with Raisers Edge fundraising system or similar donor database applications.
