Position Summary

The College of Optical Sciences is seeking applicants for an Optical Technician to fabricate, handle and test small and large optical components and complex optical/mechanical systems.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate manual and computer controlled machines to lap glass, metal, plastics, ceramics, composites and crystals to proper curve, thickness and surface finish.
  • Polishes optical components to prescribed specifications.
  • Specifies and assembles sophisticated tooling and test equipment for the fabrication and testing of optical components appropriate to projects.
  • Tests optical components to determine working characteristics and conformance to specifications using standard and modified optical test equipment and procedures.
  • Handles precision small and large optical components. Assists in the design and use of specialized fixtures for handling large optical components.
  • Makes crates and/or boxes and packs sensitive optical and mechanical components to send to customers.
  • Participates in project planning and scheduling.
  • Interacts with other University departments and serves as liaison with a variety of vendors when required.
  • Inspects and maintains quality control in project critical areas.
  • Works with administrative staff and Purchasing Department to procure necessary parts, materials, equipment and services.
  • Maintains inventories of standard supplies, tools, equipment and spare parts.
  • Performs modifications, troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance on a wide variety of standard and highly specialized technical equipment.
  • Fabricates, assembles, installs and tests optical and mechanical devices and instruments.
  • Operates many types of equipment including highly sophisticated, specialized unique systems designed and constructed solely for scientific research projects.
  • Keeps records, writes reports, procedures and may assist in the preparation of proposals or publications.
  • Overnight shift work during fabrication process.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma
  • A minimum of two years of experience in the fabrication and handling of large optical mechanical components and systems.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of optical principles, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of optical cutting and polishing techniques.
  • Skill in applying optical cutting and polishing techniques.
  • Skill in operating precision optical and mechanical instruments.
