Position Summary

Dr. Russell S. Witte, PhD has postdoctoral positions available in the laboratory of the Department of Medical Imaging at the University of Arizona (Tucson, AZ). The successful candidates will assume a lead role in developing and testing next-generation hybrid imaging systems that integrate ultrasound with other forms of energy, such as electrical current, pulsed microwaves, or light. These cutting-edge modalities, including acoustoelectric, thermoacoustic and photoacoustic imaging, potentially improve the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of human diseases ranging from epilepsy to cancer. The successful applicant(s) will work closely with a team of engineers and physician scientists to build and validate bench-top imaging systems before translation to the clinic for further evaluation and refinement.

The ideal candidate(s) will be self-motivated, able to work independently in a multidisciplinary environment, and have a track record of quality publications in biomedical imaging involving ultrasound and developing hardware systems.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop imaging protocols using a programmable ultrasound platform (Verasonics™).
  • Build ultrasound, microwave, or optical instruments for medical imaging.
  • Measure bioelectric signals from the brain or heart using multi-electrode arrays.
  • Integrate laser and ultrasound technology for photoacoustic imaging and spectroscopy.
  • Develop methods for tissue thermometry.
  • Perform acoustic modeling/simulations.
  • Devise beamforming algorithms and analyze multidimensional datasets.
  • Perform experiments in tissue-mimicking phantoms, biological tissue, animals or humans.
  • Produce high quality publications and mentor team of graduate and undergraduate students.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Optical Sciences, Applied Physics or related field.
  • At least two publications in biomedical imaging (one related to ultrasound).
  • At least three years’ experience working with hardware and instrumentation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Vantage open platform ultrasound system by Verasonics™.
  • 4+ years’ experience with bioinstrumentation (e.g., oscilloscope, function generator, scanner).
  • 4+ years’ experience in Matlab™/C++ or Labview.
  • 2+ years’ designing/building electrical circuits.
  • Fluency in English with good writing and presentation skills is highly desirable.
  • Experience with any of following: thermoacoustic imaging, acoustoelectric imaging, electrical impedance imaging, elasticity imaging, speckle tracking, functional brain or cardiac imaging, electrophysiology, ultrasound signal processing, beamforming and reconstruction, COMSOL, FOCUS, Field-II, SolidWorks, 3D printing, machine shop, working with animal or human subjects.
