Position Summary

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Arizona seeks an imaging specialist that will work on developing new therapies for malignant and non-malignant skeletal health and disease under the supervision of Dr. Patrick Mantyh. This program will be focused on working at using imaging modalities to study the molecules that regulate skeletal health, aging, disease, and pain using mouse models and human tissues. Research will be focused on the regulation of skeletal pain using molecules including NGF and sclerostin through mouse models of bone cancer, bone fracture and the aged skeleton.

The ideal candidate should be highly motivated and be interested in learning new techniques, have excellent writing, communication and organizational skills, and attention to detail, as well as possess an interest in using imaging modalities in novel ways. The ultimate goal of the laboratory is to better understand what factors drive skeletal disease and aging and translate these findings into clinical trials. This position is well suited for proactive individuals. The candidate must be detail oriented and possess creative thinking skills.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct active lab research under direction of PI .
  • Work collaboratively with PI and fellow lab members.
  • Assist fellow lab members with tissue preparation, immunohistochemical staining, and data analysis.
  • Assist fellow lab members with preparing common staining solutions, cleaning equipment, and general lab maintenance.
  • Develop an understanding behind scientific rationale for experiments.
  • Express active interest in independently learning scientific background and current research done in field in order to work towards contributing new ideas that promote current research.
  • Assist in preparation and publishing of scientific manuscripts.
  • Work independently studying relevant literature.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Basic Science or relevant area.
  • Experience with designing and performing experimental animal research.
  • Strong proficiency in the English language as members of the lab routinely author peer reviewed manuscripts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background and hands on experience in laboratory, veterinary or clinical settings.
  • Experience with fluorescence confocal microscopy.
