Position Summary

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in a collaborative project of the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (CHEE) and the Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science (SWES). The selected candidate will conduct research on the chemical and photolytic degradation of organic compounds commonly used in semiconductor manufacturing. The research will focus on a new class of emerging contaminants that are poorly characterized in terms of their environmental fate and impact. Successful candidates will have a strong background in mass spectrometry and a proven track record of exemplary research publications, presentations, and excellent communication skills.

The candidate will be hired with an initial contract for one year which may be renewed for an additional year subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Please submit your resume, a cover letter, and the names, phone numbers and email addresses of four references.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform independent studies in assigned research area.
• Design, perform and monitor experiments to investigate the chemical/photolytic transformation of selected organic contaminants.
• Quantitation and structural elucidation of organic compounds in liquid and gas phase samples using chromatography/mass spectrometry methods.
• Evaluation of environmental properties of the compounds.
• Write reports, peer-reviewed publications, and present results from the work at scientific conferences and technical forums.
• Assist with the supervision of graduate and undergraduate students.
• There may be additional duties assigned as it relates to this position.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

• PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences or a related field.
• Strong background in chemistry.
• Extensive experience with mass spectrometry methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with the analysis of trace organic chemicals in complex water matrices (e.g., solid phase extraction, gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatograph and/or ion chromatography).
• Effective writing skills for publication of articles in scientific research journals.
• Effective communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and/or collaboratively in a team research environment.
• Proven track record of exemplary research publications and presentations.
