The Department of Pharmacology in CoM has a strong internationally recognized program dedicated to the study of various forms of pain including cancer, skeletal, neuropathic, headache, and inflammation-induced pain, as well as molecular and cellular changes in the blood brain barrier. The expertise of the current faculty members encompasses a spectrum of molecular, neurobiological, cardiovascular, and neuropharmacological techniques allowing for vibrant collaborative efforts designed to address the question of the underlying causes and treatment of chronic pain.

To this end, Postdoctoral Research Associate I positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Rajesh Khanna, to study cell biology/biochemistry of sodium channel NaV1.7 regulation by novel proteins. Our work focuses on targeting regulators of voltage-gated calcium and sodium channels as a potential strategy for relief of chronic pain. The lab has a strong record of high impact papers with multiple recent publications in Nature Medicine, Pain, and PNAS. Major techniques include immunohistochemistry, protein-protein interactions and protein biochemistry are employed to support findings from our behavioral and electrophysiological experiments.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform experiments to further existing research programs and grants, concentrating on identifying new signaling regulators of channels and their mechanisms, utilizing both in vitro and in vivo models.
  • Experience with molecular biology, IF, IHC, Western analysis, and enzyme assays.
  • Experience with phosphorylation, ubiquitination, and/or a mouse colony handling.
  • Share supervisory responsibility for research technical staff including graduate and undergraduate students.
  • If required, present talks, posters and research findings at national and international conferences.
  • Attend regular group meetings; manage, maintain, and order laboratory equipment and supplies; and respond to administrative request and procedures.
  • Generate new ideas and projects for development.
  • Assist with preparation of grants and manuscripts.
  • Supervising and training junior students, may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • M.D. or Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, or related field.
