Position Summary

A funded postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. William Cance in the department of Interdisciplinary Oncology at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine – Phoenix. Dr. Cance is Deputy Director of the University of Arizona Cancer Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. The primary goal of Dr. Cance’s translational research program is to study the mechanisms of sensitivity/resistance to inhibitors of focal adhesion kinase (FAK). The laboratory also focuses on the development of novel FAK-scaffold inhibitors. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a Ph.D. in an area of biomedical sciences, a strong background in cancer biology and/or pharmacology, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. Expertise in FAK signal transduction and cancer drug discovery is a plus. This individual will be expected to work independently and in a team environment. Experience with in vivo mouse models of cancer, molecular biology techniques, cell culture, and protein analysis is required. The College of Medicine – Phoenix offers several professional development opportunities including workshops on NIH grant writing, manuscript writing, and laboratory management. The Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology is a multidisciplinary unit composed of faculty with research interests in a broad array of cancer cell biology, genetics, and cell signaling. In addition, the Center for Applied NanoBioscience and Medicine and affiliate institutions such as the Translational Genomics Research Institute, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital/Barrow Neurological Institute and the Arizona Alzheimer’s Consortium offer abundant opportunities for collaborative research efforts.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform independent research experiments under the direction of the principal investigator and/or co-principal investigator.
  • Contribute to grant writing, manuscript preparation and participation at scientific conferences.
  • Design and perform experiments, interpret data, and analyze results as outlined in NIH Grant.
  • Present findings, and prepare and submit manuscripts and research grants.
  • Perform patient-derived xenograft (PDX) experiments and cell culture.
  • Utilize molecular biology techniques, and perform immunoblotting, RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry.
  • Develop and maintain detailed records of experiments, analyzing and writing findings.
  • Develop and implement protocols as dictated by experimental results.
  • May supervise laboratory staff and manage laboratory purchasing as needed.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Recently earned PhD in an area of biomedical sciences at the time of appointment.
  • A strong background and expertise in cancer biology and/or pharmacology.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with in vivo mouse models of cancer.
  • Experience with FAK signaling and drug development.
