Position Summary

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Arizona is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral research position in natural language processing and machine learning, starting January 3, 2017. The successful candidate will design machine learning algorithms for complex problems in the understanding of natural language timelines, working with Dr, Mihai Surdeanu and other members of the natural language processing faculty at the University of Arizona ( In addition to engaging in innovative natural language processing research, the successful
candidate will write and publish scientific articles describing their methods and findings, assist in the mentoring of graduate students and the management of ongoing studies, support the writing of grant proposals for external funding opportunities, and serve as a collaborative member of a team of interdisciplinary researchers.

Applicants should demonstrate strong skills in machine learning approaches to information extraction and computational semantics. Experience with the semantic analysis of events and times is especially desirable. A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Information Science, Computational Linguistics, or a related field is required. The strongest applicants will have a mixture of methodological expertise, scholarly writing, and a clear research trajectory.

Duties & Responsibilities

Engage in innovative natural language processing research.
Write and publish scientific articles describing their methods and findings in high
quality venues (ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, etc.)
Assist in the mentoring of graduate students and the management of ongoing studies
Support the writing of grant proposals for external funding opportunities.
Serve as a collaborative member of a team of interdisciplinary researchers.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in Computer Science, Information Science, Computational Linguistics, or a
related field.
Demonstrated interest in natural language processing or machine learning techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of computational linguistic approaches to the semantic analysis of events
and times
Experience applying machine learning methods to information extraction problems
Strong scholarly writing skills and publication record
