Position Summary

The Department of Medicine is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate I to study in vitro and in vivo mechanisms involved in the development and progression of pulmonary hypertension, with a specific focus on pathways responsible for gender-specific manifestations of this disease.

Our work involves cell and animal models and incorporates tools from chemistry, redox biology, to cell culture, animal research and work with patient samples in order to develop and test various therapeutic strategies and find the biomarkers associated with pulmonary hypertension and its complications.

This NIH funded position is for a creative and self-motivated postdoctoral fellow interested in conducting cutting edge research, capable of developing research projects independently, but also capable of working effectively as a team member.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Write IACUC protocols and perform animal experiments, including animal handling, maintenance of the transgenic colony, i.p. and s.c. injection, survival and non-survival surgeries, measurement hemodynamic parameters and tissue harvesting.
  • Perform cell culture experiments.
  • Perform standard laboratory procedures, including western blotting, immunoprecipitation, ELISA.
  • Perform basic mathematical and statistical analyses.
  • Prepare manuscripts and grants.
  • Present data at weekly lab meetings and be part of the research team.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Good publication record.
  • Ability to plan, conduct experiments, analyze research data and prepare it for publications and grant submissions.
  • Ability to maintain good records.
  • Strong self-motivation, exceptional organization skills and high level of responsibility.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize the objectives.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary collaborative environment.
  • Ability to supervise graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Complete fluency in written and oral English.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in physiology, pharmacology or directly related field.
  • At least two years of experience in cardio-vascular research, rodent handling, surgery and tissue collection.
Preferred Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate should also have hands on experience in molecular biology, western blot, ELISA and cell culture experience including genetic manipulations.
  • Understanding the redox biology and/or inflammatory/immune or proliferative pathways and experience in quantification/activity assays for these pathways are highly desirable.
  • Experience in qRT-PCR, isolation and manipulation with vascular and inflammatory cells, live or fixed cell imaging; immunohistochemistry is a plus.
