Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Arizona is seeking motivated Postdoctoral Associates in the laboratory of Dr. Matthew Cordes to work in the area of de novo evolution of protein-coding DNA sequences, including both expansions of existing genes and entirely new protein-coding genes.

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry (CBC) is a university-wide department with faculty and staff in both the College of Science and the College of Medicine. This unique organizational structure provides synergistic opportunities for faculty and students who are pursuing their educational and research goals across the broad range of subdisciplines represented in CBC. Moreover, CBC offers 10 undergraduate and graduate degrees in either Chemistry (BS, BA, MA, MS, PhD) or Biochemistry (BS, BA, MA, MS, PhD), as a result of the merger of the former Biochemistry Department with the Chemistry Department in 2009. Duties & Responsibilities
  • Research duties will involve cloning, expression, and purification of de novo proteins, as well as characterization of protein structures by techniques such as circular dichroism, light scattering coupled to size exclusion chromatography, NMR, and X-ray crystallography. Protein function may be characterized in some cases as well.
  • Other duties may include mentoring and training of undergraduate researchers in the laboratory.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biophysics, or a related field is required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with X-ray crystallography NMR spectroscopy as applied to biological macromolecules, as well as experience with protein purification.
