Position Summary

At the UA Steele Children’s Research Center, our physician-scientists and researchers are passionately dedicated to improving children’s health through basic science research, translational research and clinical research.

As the research arm of the UA Department of Pediatrics, the Steele Center is one of the prestigious Centers of Excellence in the UA College of Medicine. Our researchers and physician-scientists conduct research in many areas, such as autism, autoimmune disorders, cancer and blood diseases, type 1 diabetes, GI disorders and lung disease, to name a few. Our researchers receive grant support from national funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the CDC, foundations, non-profit organizations and community philanthropy.

The Children’s Research Center seeks a candidate for a position of Assistant Research Scientist to pursue studies related to the role of sodium-hydrogen exchanger 8 in mucosal protection and tumor development in the intestine. Work will involve cell culture, immunological, molecular biological procedures and in vivo murine experiments. This position is in the research lab of Drs. Fayez K. Ghishan and Hua Xu.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design and independently execute experiments; Collect and perform preliminary analysis of generated data.
  • Train and supervise undergraduate, medical and graduate student lab members.
  • Work as a member of the principal investigators research team and contribute novel hypotheses, ideas, and develop novel methodologies.
  • Contribute and participate in the authorship of research publications and presentations.
  • Collect, analyze and graph data, conclude research projects in a timely manner, and write reports, manuscripts and grants.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Excellent communication and writing skills for grant submissions and publications.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD degree.
  • Minimum two years of post-doctoral training in molecular biology, or cell biology, or physiology, and minimum four years of experience in research involving molecular/cellular biology.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, mammalian cell culture, mouse disease models, confocal microscopy, ELISA.
  • Ability to rapidly and successfully learn new techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a laboratory research environment.
  • Comfortable trouble-shooting in laboratory experiments.
