Position Summary

The University of Arizona Imaging Technology Laboratory (ITL) is seeking a qualified applicant for a Research Specialist opening. The successful candidate will assist in the production of charge coupled devices (CCDs) and CMOS imagers for scientific and industrial applications. The work will be performed entirely in the laboratories of ITL and requires detailed and critical tasks involving chemistry, equipment operation, and documentation. ITL is a research group within Steward Observatory and is located off-campus near Broadway Blvd. and Euclid Ave.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Must be able to perform tasks of routine and repetitive nature with minimal supervision. Maintain high attention to detail while adhering to safety, electrostatic-discharge control, and other protocols.
  • Work in labs using a variety of chemicals, including acids and organic solutions.
  • Use equipment such as microscopes, bonders, ovens, probers, dicing saws, vacuum systems, and custom equipment to fabricate, assemble, and inspect imaging devices.
  • Prepare and inspect materials and assemblies such as photomasks, custom silicon wafers, and completed detectors for shipping and receiving.
  • Maintain stock inventory of chemicals and materials.
  • Take notes during processing. Analyze data and operate personal computers using Microsoft Office and Windows. Enter relevant information in computer databases.
  • Perform routine maintenance of related equipment, such as cleaning vacuum chambers, changing air filters, etc.
  • Work in conjunction with a variety of ITL staff members depending on the tasks or experiments to be performed.

Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Hands-on experience in a laboratory or similar environment.
  • Ability to perform detailed work using microscopes.
  • Ability to operate semiconductor processing or similar equipment with proper training.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Microsoft Windows experience.
  • Microsoft Office experience.
  • US citizen or legal permanent resident status due to ITAR Export Control/ITAR Projects compliance standards.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with hazardous chemicals in a scientific laboratory setting.
  • Knowledge of Charge Coupled Devices, imaging, optics, chemistry, and/or electronics.
  • Experience processing or assembling semiconductor devices.
  • Experience operating complex equipment such as etch processors, wafer dicing saws, wire bonders, wafer probe stations, high vacuum chambers, and similar equipment.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-883, IPC-A-600, or IPC-A-610.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar 2D or 3D CAD programs.
