Position Summary

The Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology in partnership with the Center for Applied Nanobioscience and Medicine invites outstanding scientists and/or engineers in translational research in personalized medicine with expertise in the development of biotechnology and advance biomedical techniques around omics, molecular and cellular biology, remote medicine, radiogenomics and nanobioscience.

As part of its continued investment in research, the University of Arizona (UA) seeks to hire an accomplished interdisciplinary scientists and/or engineer in translational radio-oncology science and technology at the Assistant, or Associate Professor level, tenured or tenure-eligible. The successful applicant may be in a variety of translational biomedical and oncology fields including, but not limited to:

  • novel instruments or techniques to identify biomarkers of health and disease,
  • technology and method development to support preclinical and/or clinical intervention research, especially for radiobiology and genomics,
    and
  • efforts that span the translational spectrum from molecular, to small animal, to human basic science and clinical applications, to positively impact human health, in particular when related to precision health and personalized radiotherapy.

The faculty member will have a primary faculty appointment in the Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology at the College of Medicine – Phoenix, and a professional appointment in the Center for Applied Nanobioscience and Medicine. The faculty will be expected teach courses at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels and contribute to mentoring students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds. The faculty member will also participate in outreach and contribute to departmental, college, and university service. In these and other ways, the faculty member will help to develop innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity, and expanding collaborations with community and business partners.

The successful candidate will be characterized by a drive to advance the field of translational science and technology, and will have demonstrated intellectual leadership and an inclusive, collaborative spirit of team-building for interdisciplinary research. Furthermore, the successful candidate will be catalytic in building research partnerships between the existing staff members of the center and groups of existing UA COM-PHX faculty, external academic, clinical and industry partners, and application drivers in nanobioscience and medicine to create and provide leadership for new programs that translate fundamental science and technology advances to the bedside, field, and marketplace.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop a nationally recognized and continuously funded research program in the field of biophysics, nano-bio-technology, radiogenomics and radiation oncology.
  • Demonstrate scholarly activity by publishing results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Develop a projects portfolio from extramural funding through diverse sources such as governmental agencies, industrial contracts, and philanthropy, or technology transfer and platform technology commercialization.
  • Participate in both undergraduate and graduate education, and in advising duties and committee assignments.
  • Expand collaborative efforts with The University of Arizona biomedical scientists and physician scientists.
  • Participate as a productive member of the Center and the College through impactful scholarly work and good citizenship.
  • There may be additional duties assigned as it relates to this position.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD or MD in related field
  • Post-doctoral training in the proposed area of research
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated scholarly accomplishment in research
  • Demonstrated experience as principal investigator
  • For applicants at the Assistant and Associate Professor level, demonstrated experience as principal investigator and evidence of active extramural funding
  • Outstanding record of research accomplishments and publications
  • Demonstrated experience in submitting grant proposals, developing industrial alliance and contract(s) and supervising research staff while collaborating with administrators and financial staff members.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively promoting the institutional objectives of the unit and its branding
  • Prior teaching experience with Medical and/or graduate students
