The Research Quality Assurance Compliance Associate is responsible for promoting Quality Assurance initiatives in support of research compliance programs, including: Human Subject Protection Program; Animal Care and User Committee (IACUC); Conflict of Interest; HIPAA/Privacy; Radiation, Chemical, and Biosafety; and Export Control.

This position is responsible for improving the quality of research compliance services to the UA’s research community, and increasing the effectiveness of the UA’s institutional compliance culture. Responsibilities include performing internal quality assurance reviews and/or audits of activities subject to research compliance policies, procedures and training requirements; coordinating the involvement of compliance programs, as required, during internal and external audits and investigations; reviewing, updating, and suggesting improvements to research compliance policies and procedures; recommending and monitoring corrective actions, and other duties as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Conduct and/or collaborate with compliance units, periodic quality assurance reviews of the Universities research compliance programs (including but not limited to, the Human Subject Protection Program/IRB, Conflict of Interest, Export Control, Privacy, Responsible Conduct of Research, IACUC, Research & Laboratory Safety Services) related to compliance with policies, procedures, training requirements, regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
2. Coordinate internal and external reviews, audits and investigations with key stakeholders.
3. Identify areas in need of improved research/customer service or regulatory compliance oversight, make recommendations, and lead or assist process improvement initiatives.
4. Develop schedules for the periodic review of programs and track progress of matters subject to review, and evaluates the effectiveness of corrective or preventive action plans.
5. Partner with Compliance team members and/or stakeholders to identify and address non-compliance and identify solutions.
6. Collect and maintain metrics to track level of service and efficacy with respect to the mission and performance of regulatory compliance functions.
7. Prepare compliance reports and compliance trending reports
8. Prepare reports with recommendations related to compliance risk for review and decisions by leadership.
9. Perform ad hoc research compliance reviews, evaluations and investigations as assigned.
10. Serve as a resource to compliance programs on audit and quality assurance subject matter.
11. Develop standard operating procedures, audit report databases, and templates.
12. Assist management with performing gap assessments, as well as streamlining and improving existing workflow and quality procedures.
13. Conduct and/or coordinate compliance-training initiatives including conducting educational sessions, drafting and reviewing compliance manuals and training materials, and developing training presentations.
14. Maintain current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of experience in Quality Assurance, research compliance, grants management or similar.
• Ability to understand and apply laws, regulations and policies related to the responsible conduct of research.
• Ability to understand and critically analyze various operational systems, data, and documentation used in research studies to identify potential research compliance risk.
• Demonstrated skills using computer applications for data retrieval and analysis.
• Excellent communication skills and organizational abilities, and ability to interact with process owners and faculty and staff across the University at a variety of levels and positions.
• Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
• Ability to plan and prioritize tasks, work with minimal direction, and meet deadlines.
• High level of attention to details, thoroughness in making initial assessments, and attention to the conduct of subsequent monitoring activities and record-keeping.
• Experience in communicating information of sensitive and confidential nature both internally and externally as appropriate.
• High degree of integrity.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in public health, behavioral sciences, law, or related field.
• Experience working within a university research or academic medical center compliance office, or healthcare organization with significant university research contacts.
• Familiarity in application of quality assurance principles, concepts, industry practices, and standards
• Familiarity with institutional policies related to research compliance.
• Familiarity with information management and tracking systems, record retention systems, and data security risk management.
• Experience in research compliance reviews, clinical trial monitoring or auditing.
• Familiarity in Good Clinical Practices (GCPs) and/or Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs).
