The successful candidate selected for this position will serve as a diagnostic pathologist in the Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (AzVDL) located at the West Agricultural Farm 2831 N. Freeway

This position is ideal for candidates seeking additional pathology training in a diagnostic laboratory setting prior to sitting for the ACVP or ECVP certifying exams. Candidates will receive mentoring in pathology under supervision of 3 board certified pathologists.

The AzVDL provides accurate and timely diagnostic assistance in animal health to veterinarians, animal owners, university researchers, and state and federal agencies. The submission of specimens through practicing veterinarians is encouraged, but specimens are also accepted from owners. AzVDL works closely with the office of the State Veterinarian, USDA A.V.I.C., Arizona Game and Fish Department, and other state and federal agencies. This laboratory serves a diverse client base with submissions of wild animals, exotic zoo animals, pet animals, horses, and food producing animals.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct postmortem examinations and interpret the results of pathology examinations with other laboratory results.
  • Read and interpret surgical biopsy submissions.
  • Report findings to laboratory clients verbally and/or in writing.
  • Consult with laboratory clients on laboratory tests related to postmortem and surgical cases.
  • Interpret histopathology for tissues submitted from University Animal Care (UAC) for research animal diagnostic purposes and consult with UAC veterinarians on findings.
  • Interpret tissues submitted by University of Arizona researchers for comparative/experimental pathology purposes and report findings to researchers.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the laboratory director.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree.
  • Completion of residency training in pathology and eligible to sit for the certifying examination of the American (ACVP) or European (ECVP) College of Veterinary Pathologists.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent communication skills.
