Position Information

Title Postdoctoral Research Associate I
Department Geosciences (1205)
Location Main Campus
Position Summary

This is a Postdoctoral fellowship on landscape evolution as a function of spatial scale in semi-arid watersheds. The University of Arizona seeks to hire a postdoctoral scholar for a collaboration between the University of Arizona (Jon Pelletier) and the Tucson office of the Agricultural Research Service (Mary Nichols and Mark Nearing). A rich suite of data, including airborne and ground-based lidar, high-resolution aerial photography, runoff and sediment fluxes from a network of supercritical flumes, etc. are available. These data, together with an uptick in recent interest in using WGEW as a test bed for landscape evolution models over a range of time scales, provide an excellent opportunity to both advance landscape evolution modeling generally as well as improve our understanding of semi-arid landscape evolution under climate change.

Position is a one-to-two year job assignment, with possibility of extension if additional funding is secured.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!

Accepting a new position is a big life step. We want potential candidates and their families to be able to make informed decisions. Candidates who are considering relocation to the Tucson or Phoenix area, and have been offered an on-site interview, are encouraged to use the free services offered by Above & Beyond Relocation Services (ABRS).Ask your department contact to be introduced to ABRS prior to your visit.

The University of Arizona has been listed by Forbes as one of America’s Best Employers in the United States and WorldatWork and the Arizona Department of Health Services have recognized us for our innovative work-life programs. Duties & Responsibilities

This postdoc will analyze data and develop numerical models aimed at quantifying landscape evolution in semi-arid watersheds using Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed (WGEW) as a test case. Particular interest is on examining hydrologic and geomorphic processes as a function of spatial scale, taking advantage of the nested experimental design of instrumented watersheds in WGEW, quantifying the pulsed nature of sediment transport, and quantifying the impact of decadal-to-millennial scale vegetation changes on semi-arid watershed dynamics.

The Department of Geosciences supports Inclusive Excellence, the University diversity strategic initiative designed to engage every member of the university community in diversity and inclusiveness. Candidates are encouraged to support the department’s diversity and inclusiveness efforts and to especially contribute to teaching and mentoring, student engagement, community outreach, university service, and other efforts designed to increase participation by members of underrepresented groups in departmental and university activities.
