Position Summary

Facilities Management is looking for a Staff Technician, Senior in our Building Automations team. Our ideal candidate has HVAC Controls experience in a variety of controls systems, the ability to effectively communicate and whose experience in controls allows them to quickly troubleshoot and diagnose HVAC control problems on-site.

The Building Automations group maintains all of the HVAC controls, instrumentation, and utility metering at the University. This position ensures that building HVAC systems operate as efficiently as possible. They achieve this by calibrating sensors, modifying operating sequences, and upgrading HVAC controls. They also answer space comfort calls and troubleshoot issues with temperature and ventilation in offices, labs, and classrooms. They use Mobile devices to access building controls via Web servers.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Installs, maintains and repairs HVAC controls, including pneumatic, electric and electronic controls.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs HVAC control problems, including dampers, coils, HVAC steam related controls, small air handling equipment and all types of valves.
  • Adjusts and calibrates pneumatic/electronic devices.
  • Inspects and services controls on a scheduled basis.
  • Responds to service calls and troubleshoots problems.
  • Prepares estimates for the repair and/or installation of new HVAC systems and makes recommendations for such repairs and services.
  • Troubleshoots and tests controls using digital multi-meters, anemometers, infrared thermometers, gauges, and digital/analog manometers.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Valid driver’s license upon employment.
  • At least two years of licensed driving experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the tools, materials and test equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of HVAC control systems.
  • Experience installing, adjusting and repairing HVAC control systems.
  • Experience reading and understanding schematics of electrical and electronic circuits.
  • Experience analyzing HVAC malfunctions from performance and test equipment readings and determining appropriate repairs.

Completion of a two year technical vocational or college program in the field of expertise with emphasis on math, science, engineering or technology AND eight years of broadly diversified experience in a variety of positions involved with complex applied technology such as science projects, aerospace, nuclear power, or sophisticated instruments; OR, ten years of broadly diversified experience in a variety of positions involved with complex applied technology such as science projects, aerospace, nuclear power or sophisticated instruments; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficient in at least one HVAC control protocol (e.g. Lon, BacNet, N2)
  • Proficient in at least one brand of digital controls (e.g. Distech, Allerton, Honeywell).
  • Proficient in either procedural or graphical programming of HVAC controls.
  • Proficient with use of Apps on Mobile Devices
  • Proficient with Lonworks protocol
  • Proficient with Tridium AX
  • Familiarity with Tridium R2.
  • Proficiency working with controls from two or more of the following vendors: Distech, Johnson Controls, Trane, Barber Coleman, Circon, Invensys I/A, Siemens, Honeywell
