Position Summary

The Department of Medicine and the research laboratory of Dr. Stephen Black are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate I. A successful candidate will have extensive research experience in microscopy, as well as basic knowledge in cell biology, molecular biology, and cell physiology. In addition to his/her own experimental procedures, the postdoctoral fellow will work with other lab members to study the pathogenic mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension and acute lung injury.

The primary purpose of this appointment is to engage in advanced research training for the postdoctoral fellow in preparation for an independent academic position. Under the principal investigator mentorship, the postdoctoral fellow will be engaging in research activities that include: a) daily experimental work in the lab, b) presenting his/her experimental results both within departmental meetings and in conferences, and writing manuscripts, fellowship and grant applications based on his/her research results; and c) working as a member of the principal investigator’s lab team.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Molecular biological techniques (e.g., Western blot, gene transfection, mutagenesis, plasmid amplification).
  • Train new lab members.
  • Participate in writing grant proposals and articles.
  • Attend weekly lab meetings.
  • There may be additional duties assigned as it relates to this position.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in a related field.
  • One year microscopy experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Initiative to advance projects as a team as well as independently.
  • Basic cellular and molecular biology techniques.
  • Interest/experience in mitochondrial dynamics.
  • Interest/experience studying pulmonary hypertension, vascular biology or acute lung injury.
