Position Summary

The School of Animal & Comparative Biomedical Sciences is currently seeking a well-organized and highly motivated person for the position of Research Specialist for the Aquaculture Pathology Lab (APL). The incumbent will perform diagnosis of diseases in shrimp by polymerase chain reaction. The candidate must be highly detail-oriented and able to work well on their own with good organization and multi-tasking skills.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform nucleic acid extractions and PCR/RT-PCR/qPCR for diagnostic cases.
• Work with other team members of APL to develop improved PCR methods for the detection of viral and bacterial pathogens infecting shrimp.
• Adhere to ISO procedures and regulations.
• Data entry to APL Database, analysis of data, preparation of reports, and providing reports to the clients and interacting with the clients on a regular basis.
• Isolation and culturing of bacterial pathogens infecting shrimp.
PCR detection of bacterial pathogens, sequencing of PCR amplicons and sequence analysis to characterize bacteria.
• Carry out shrimp bioassay using bacterial pathogens, sampling of animals and PCR diagnostic of pathogens.
• Oversee student workers.
• Additional duties may be assigned.

Also, experience in nucleic acid isolation, PCR and gel electrophoresis are required.

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
