Position Summary

The Department of Internal Medicine and Flow Cytometry Core at The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix, invites candidates to join our team as a Research Specialist. The Research Specialist will work with the Pulmonary and Endothelial Research Laboratory team and the Director of the Flow Cytometry Core, and will be expected to perform skilled procedures, tests and analyses. A successful candidate will demonstrate their aptitude for scientific processes and previous training in Biological Sciences and/or Immunology. The Research Specialist will work with animal models, assist with animal surgeries and maintain animal colonies. This position will also be expected to process human and animal tissues or organs as needed for histological or flow cytometry experiments.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs administrative functions such as assisting in procuring supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinates and/or conducts library and computer searches for research or archaeological data, some of which may include specialized archival research.
  • Assists in judging the validity of data obtained from experiments; data analysis following established protocols.
  • Processing of human specimens for pathology, isolation of cells and nucleic acids and assays on the samples. Perform flow cytometry assays on human samples.
  • Experience in general cell culture and sterile technique.
  • Assists in the development of written operating procedures and performs quality control checks to ensure procedures are followed.
  • Operates and maintains general laboratory and experimental equipment such as freezers, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, incubators and analytical balances.
  • Assist with necropsies and surgical procedures on research animals.
    *Maintenance of rodent breeding colony.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of basic laboratory techniques.
  • Animal colony management and experience handling rodents.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related field.
  • Previous experience working with animals and in a research laboratory.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web-based searches and platforms.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences with two (2) years’ laboratory experience.
