Position Summary

The candidate for this position will be an advocate and educator in inclusive campus and community environments for students with intellectual disabilities in the Project FOCUS* program at the University of Arizona. Knowledge about systematic instruction and the ability to create modified materials to support comprehension of college course work. The candidate will demonstrate a history of effective, positive, and respectful communication with students, parents, families, and community partners. The candidate will also demonstrate a history of creative initiatives within their previous employment. Finally, the candidate will be experienced in 21st century technology including knowledge of web tools, multi-media editing, and mobile technology.

*Project FOCUS is an inclusive transition program for students with intellectual disabilities at the University of Arizona. The mission is to provide young adults with Intellectual Disabilities internship and work opportunities through employment training and prepare them for competitive employment and a successful adult life. The program combines academic instruction, internship experiences, career exploration, and relevant work skills training.

Duties & Responsibilities

*Ongoing systematic instruction specific to the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities
*Apply basic knowledge of AAC
*Design and create instructional adaptations and materials
*Implement and model best practices in the field of intellectual disabilities
*Communicate with a range of agencies, stakeholders and other related entities
*Support, guide, and supervise peer mentors
*Develop and organize student and peer schedules
*Network with campus organizations and leaders
*Advocate for emerging technologies
*Engage, as needed, on a state, national or international level as related to higher education for students with intellectual disabilities

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum Bachelor’s degree
• At least 2 years of relevant experience working with transition-age youth 16-24 years, providing instruction and/or vocational training experience, marketing a program to the community, and/or job placement and job coaching experience
• Current Arizona State Department of Education certification in K-12 Special education—Severe or mild to moderate specialty areas OR eligible to apply for certification within 60 days of employment.
• Must demonstrate strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
• 21st Century Technology skills
• Ability to assess comprehension of content and create modifications and adaptions as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:
*Proficiency in American Sign Language,
*Master Degree in Special Education
*Experience with a variety of learners
