Position Summary

The University of Arizona is seeking a non-tenure eligible, Research Scientist, focusing on biomedical and translational research in the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) Research Study and other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Translational Research in Special Populations (AVPTR).

The Research Scientist, will report to and managed by the AVPTR. This position may lead into a Research Associate Professor if qualifications are met. The ideal candidate will conduct specialized research in the fields of clinical and/or translational research, community outreach and engagement, as well as cancer health disparities and recruitment of underserved populations to clinical trials. This position will be leading the development of long-term relationships with underserved population and minorities in the state.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist with all administrative functions and provide oversight of operations of Research Study and in evaluating performance of project using relevant metrics.
  • Prepare recurring or special reports on program activities. Develop and maintain program timeline and actively managing study progress.
  • Establish, maintain confidential data collection, tracking systems, leveraging analytics to make recommendations to senior leaders.
  • Provide clarity to team members on project tasks and schedule through various project phases. Prepare deliverables and presentations to stakeholders, meeting coordination, and administrative tasks.
  • Collaborate closely with team members to determine research study scope, priority, resource allocation, budget, infrastructure, building and logistics.
  • Train and supervise study Navigators and programs, while proactively managing study by using critical thinking skills to anticipate study tasks as needed.
  • Support AVPTR with management and tracking of assigned projects and research initiatives in support of program mission. Define problems, troubleshoot, and identify potential solutions.
  • Consult and review research progress with PI in the design of projects, and preparation of research proposals and writes scientific articles with results of research work while assisting PI in preparing grant proposals.
  • Expand collaborative efforts with the University of Arizona biomedical scientists and physician scientists. In addition to establishing expertise in working with diverse communities.
  • Perform scientific data collections, reductions and analyses involving routine procedures characterized by moderate use of independent judgment.
  • Write summaries of projects, documenting findings and procedures used and assist in writing manuscripts.
  • Participate at international scientific meetings to display research via poster display or oral presentations.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of business planning and management practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of IRB submission and compliance documents.
  • Pre and post-award management.
  • Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analysis.
  • Skill in report writing, analyzing and evaluating research data.
  • Experience with grant progress reports and in the conduct and analysis of research data.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in Science or Health Education.
  • 2 years’ experience managing research studies or managerial skills.
  • 2 years’ experience working with extramural funding agencies, e.g. NIH, NSF, PICORI, Foundations, and industry sponsors.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • PhD in health science/education field
  • Track record of obtaining peer-reviewed funding
  • Citations of work in national and state-level agencies and panels including state legislatures
  • Experience in community-based participatory research or training
  • National collaborations in the area of community outreach and engagement
  • Active, federal agency-funded peer-reviewed research at the level of Principal Investigator (PI), Multiple PI, or Project Director of a program project grant award
  • Three or more years related experience-leading teams.
  • Established expertise in working with diverse communities.
  • Clinical research coordination, project coordination and/or manager experience, preferred.
  • Post-award experience with knowledge of Federal and University guidelines.
  • Demonstrate understanding of academic basic and clinical medical research.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Excellent organizational, critical thinking, and decision making skills.
