Position Summary

The Cooper Center for Environmental Learning offers memorable overnight and day field trip experiences to Southern Arizona schools. The Center’s Mission focuses on positive and enriching experiences in nature and inspiring children and adults to live more lightly and harmoniously on our planet. The Center is a partnership between the University of Arizona College of Education and Tucson Unified School District, and also provides University students with opportunities in hands-on teaching experience and research.

The Cooper Center is hiring one staff member for a position that focuses on educational programs for children in grades K-8 and working with University of Arizona students. Programs emphasize understanding of ecological processes, developing positive feelings for the natural world, and inspiring each participant to make personal lifestyle changes to be more environmentally friendly. The educator will gain valuable teaching experience in an outdoor setting as part of our team, working with 2,000 – 3,000 students. Cooper Center staff facilitate memorable connections between each learner and their environment. The position begins November 20th, 2017 and ends May 25th, 2018.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead and assist educational programs in outdoor settings (program training provided)
• Participate in program-related tasks including planning, setup, materials design and maintenance
• Assist with field experience logistics and administration including scheduling, group arrivals and departures, teacher communication, program evaluation, etc.
• Participate in special events and workshops at Cooper Center, on UA campus, and in the community
• Perform basic facility maintenance & janitorial tasks (cleaning, basic repairs, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

Teaching experience in formal and/or informal settings with students of different grades. Physical conditioning and ability to work outdoors in a desert setting (warm weather). Enthusiasm, strong communication skills, ability to work collaboratively and respectfully as part of a team and independently, a flair for being theatrical, and a positive attitude.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, four years of progressively responsible instructional or subject work experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Sonoran Desert ecology and natural resources management.
  • Administrative skills and ability to learn and adapt quickly.
  • Preferably K-8 teaching experience in formal and/or informal settings.
