Position Summary

The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center dedicated to the prevention and cure of cancer through patient care, research, and education. The Operations Office is a functional component of the UACC centralized clinical trials unit that is organized to provide clinical research staff support for interventional oncology protocols. This Research Specialist, Senior position will provide dedicated clinical trials support for clinical trials at the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide senior level coordination of protocols, regulatory and data for assigned, complex clinical trials.
  • Coordinate the daily activities of study conduct at the University of Arizona Cancer Phoenix clinic.
  • Work with nursing, pharmacy, laboratory staff to ensure study procedures are performed according to protocol and Good Clinical Practice.
  • Direct, monitor and participate in research activities including pre-screening, consent, data collection, data entry, query resolution, evaluation and analysis for research projects.
  • Perform regulatory duties for assigned clinical trials. This may include submissions to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Scientific Review Committee (SRC), Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB) as well as other regulatory authorities as required by assigned trials.
  • Participate in the preparation and execution of routine monitoring visits and audits.
  • Develop and implement strategies to ensure protocol compliance, exceptional source documentation, and timely and accurate reporting of data and adverse events.
  • Promptly and accurately inputting data, as appropriate, into the clinical trials management system, the electronic health record, and other systems as required.
  • Respond to Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) and Serious Adverse Event (SAE) queries promptly and completely.
  • Serve as a liaison between the disease team and study sponsor to foster productive relationships.
  • Serve as a liaison with community oncology practices to foster mutually beneficial relationships to enhance research options for cancer patients.
  • Assist in organizing and actively participating in bi-monthly (every two weeks) disease team meetings.
  • Serve as a liaison with members and other components of the Centralized Cancer Clinical Trials Unit, principal investigators, sponsors and healthcare facilities to ensure adequate infrastructure to carry out clinical research objectives.
  • Provide input to management regarding the development and implementation of procedures and processes that will provide the resources and ability to conduct research at the satellite clinic.
  • Communicate regularly with staff regarding protocol and patient status involving studies open at Phoenix campus.
  • Actively participate in unit meetings.
  • Participate in the training and mentoring of junior operations staff.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three years of related research experience; OR, bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment and four years of related research experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous work with national cooperative groups.
  • Previous work in oncology clinical trials.
  • Certification as a Clinical Research Coordinator.
  • Knowledge of medical oncology terminology and treatment concepts.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of complex regulations, policies and procedures concerning the conduct of clinical trials.
