Position Summary

Please note: The Minimum Qualifications for this position have been updated, as well as any corresponding Supplemental Questions. As a result, the review date for this position has been extended to 11/09/2017. Dr. Russell S. Witte, PhD and Dr. Clara Curiel (MD) have a postdoctoral position available in the laboratory of the Department of Medical Imaging at the University of Arizona (Tucson, AZ). The successful candidate will assume a lead role in developing photoacoustic technology with applications to the skin, lymphatic imaging, tumor monitoring, and melanin assessment. The successful applicant will work closely with a team of engineers and physician scientists to build and validate bench-top imaging systems and subsequently support the deployment into the clinic for further evaluation and refinement. The ideal candidate will be curious, self-motivated, able to work independently in a multidisciplinary environment, have experience with building hardware systems, and a track record of quality publications in ultrasound, optical and/or photoacoustic imaging.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Build photoacoustic devices for medical imaging.
  • Develop imaging protocols using a programmable ultrasound platform (Verasonics™).
  • Devise beamforming and signal processing algorithms for real-time imaging.
  • Perform bench-top photoacoustic experiments in phantoms.
  • Integrate US and PA technology designed for the clinic.
  • Support photoacoustic prototype system during clinical testing.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of performing acoustic modeling/simulations.
  • Ability to produce high quality publications and mentor a team of graduate and undergraduate students.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Optical Sciences, Applied Physics or related field.
  • At least two publications in ultrasound; OR optical imaging; OR spectroscopy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years’ experience working with optical components and lasers.
  • Experience with Vantage open platform ultrasound system by Verasonics™.
  • 3+ years’ experience with bioinstrumentation (e.g., oscilloscope, function generator, scanner).
  • 4+ years’ experience in Matlab™/C++ or Labview.
  • Fluency in English with good writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience with any of following: optical imaging, thermoacoustic imaging, ultrasound signal processing, beamforming and reconstruction, COMSOL, FOCUS, Field-II, SolidWorks, K-wave, 3D printing, machine shop, working with animal or human subjects, RCM knowledge.
