The Department of Surgery is seeking a Research Technician to assist the Cardiothoracic Surgery Lab with ongoing studies. This position will include performing standard laboratory procedures, cleaning, and maintaining laboratory equipment. The Research Technician will analyze data, record detailed documentation and report to participating investigators; assist with writing papers and manuscripts for publication; may be required to travel to remote locations to perform research experiments.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform standard laboratory procedures such as maintaining cell cultures requiring the use of sterile technique, processing tissue samples and preparing slides using staining techniques.
  • Compile data and assist in routine preliminary analyses; maintain research data in laboratory notebook, write summary reports and report findings to investigator.
  • Assist in the development of written operating procedures and perform quality control checks to ensure procedures are followed.
  • Collect samples or data and perform lab analysis and/or quantify and tabulate results.
  • Organize supplies, materials or equipment and set-up equipment for laboratory experiments or demonstrations; may perform minor equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain detailed records of controlled substances in the laboratory; package waste material and arrange for disposal according to established procedures.
  • Assist with basic mathematical and statistical analyses.
  • Clean glassware and other laboratory equipment or materials using appropriate standards; keep laboratory area clean.
  • Assist in training research students working in the laboratory.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analyses.
  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating data.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
