Position Summary

The Student Union is seeking a Manager of Retail Operations to oversee the University’s printing headquarters. Fast Copy and Fast Design provide printing and design services across campus to include color printing, class notes, advertisement materials and color posters of every size. The incumbent will be tasked with meeting departmental budget goals while also managing marketing opportunities and seeking out product and service development initiatives.

The Manager of Retail Operations will also oversee the University’s US Post Office contract station located in the Student Union building; ensuring compliance with all Federal regulations, maintenance of records, and production of required reports.

The Arizona Student Unions consist of both the Student Union Memorial Center (SUMC) and the Park Student Union, as well as Highland Market and a number of convenience stores and food stops around campus. In addition to campus dining services and catering, the Arizona Student Unions also run mall scheduling, concessions at athletic events, Fast Copy & Design, the Union Galleries, Games Room, the Gallagher Theatre, and a Post Office Contract Unit.

The Student Union Memorial Center is one of the largest student unions in the United States. The SUMC contains everything students need – restaurants, retail spaces, a bank, lounges, study/meeting rooms, a computer lab, art gallery, and a movie theater. SUMC is often referred to as the “living room” of the University. Duties & Responsibilities
  • Oversee all retail service operations and activities, manage inventory control, and provide strategic direction and oversight in a manner that is consistent with best practices while adhering to the business guidelines of the University of Arizona Student Unions.
  • Oversee US Post Office branch operations and activities, ensure compliance with all Federal regulations and produce and maintain records and reports as required.
  • Plan and administer budget, forecast revenues and expenses, prepare financial reports and adjust budget based on market trends and conditions.
  • Establish goals and objectives and develop and implement policies and procedures to improve retail operations, service and programming activities.
  • Train, supervise, mentor and evaluate all full-time employees, student employees, community volunteers, and student interns.
  • Manage vendor relationships and contracts, and work closely with campus departments to establish new business opportunities and strengthen current relationships.
  • Continually evaluate and improve customer service and product offerings, work procedures and operational methods.
  • Plan and execute marketing decisions for all sales initiatives in collaboration with Student Dining Services and Student Unions Marketing.
  • Establish and implement policies and procedures for retail and program operations.
  • Conduct market analyses and make strategic recommendations to increase customer opportunities, service and overall sales.
  • Attend management meetings and serve on key Union committees and work groups.
  • Exhibit strong oral and written communications skills, and demonstrate ability to work in team environment with a strong customer service orientation.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology or related field AND two years offset printing equipment operation and maintenance experience which includes one year supervisory experience; OR, six years offset printing equipment operation and maintenance experience which includes one year supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
  • Working knowledge of printing and copying equipment, operations and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of and experience with supervisory practices and principles.
  • Skill in performing offset press, bindery and related operations.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license at time of employment and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

  • 2 years managerial experience in a busy print shop
