Duties & Responsibilities
  • Purification of retinal rod disk membranes containing rhodopsin and their characterization using UV-visible spectrophotometry. Membranes containing rhodopsin will be exposed to polymer solutions (polyethylene glycol) and the light activation of rhodopsin under conditions of osmotic stress will be investigated.
  • Equilibrium thermodynamic relations will be used to analyze how the equilibrium constant depends on the osmotic pressure, and from these relations the increase in the hydrated protein volume due to light activation will be determined. Knowing the partial molar volume of water will then enable the number of water molecules that flood the protein interior to be calculated.
  • The candidate is expected to support and advance Inclusive Excellence, the UA diversity and inclusiveness strategic initiative designed to create an inclusive environment for all faculty, staff, and students.
  • Additional duties may apply.
