Position Summary

The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center dedicated to the prevention and cure of cancer through patient care, research, and education.

The Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) Team is a functional component of the UACC centralized clinical trials unit that is organized to provide internal quality assurance/quality control and monitoring for investigator-initiated trials that require oversight by the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) within the UACC.

This Research Specialist, Senior position will provide dedicated monitoring support for investigator-initiated clinical trials at the University of Arizona Cancer Center. This employee will have regular contact with investigators, regulatory staff, operations staff, and administrative staff. It is expected that this person will have significant knowledge regarding current monitoring principles and practices.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct clinical site IIT monitoring, ensuring compliance with the protocol, Code of Federal Regulations/International Conference of Harmonization/Good Clinical Practices (CFR/ICH/GCP) guidelines, local regulations and applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Review source documents and case report forms for clarity, consistency and accuracy.
  • Review and track regulatory documentation; track subject screening and enrollment.
  • Prepare and/or modify monitoring documents.
  • Monitor close communication with site staff to assure adherence to protocol and regulatory guidelines and resolve problems timely.
  • Maintain thorough understanding of current monitoring practices and applicable regulatory requirements and guidelines.
  • Conduct study initiation, interim monitoring and close-out visits for Investigator-initiated clinical research trials.
  • Actively participate in unit meetings.
  • Provide input to CTO management regarding the development and implementation of procedures and processes within the QA/QC office.
  • Assist in the development of new standard operating procedures as needed for ethical/regulatory/privacy matters.
  • Serve as a role expert; act as a primary resource for answering role related and compliance process related questions.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Understanding of CFR/GCP/ICH guidelines.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of medical oncology terminology and treatment concepts.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of a clinical trial management system (e.g. OnCore).
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.

Master’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three years of related research experience; OR, Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment and four years of related research experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience with cancer clinical research.
  • Working knowledge of university policies and procedures related to research administration.
