Position Summary

The Department of Surgery is “The place where people want to be.” We are offering an excellent opportunity for a self-directed individual to provide support to the Urology Division as a Research Specialist. This position requires a high degree of professionalism. Exercising initiative, resourcefulness, integrity, and good judgment will be essential. Basic knowledge of cancer biology and prostate or kidney cancer is preferable but not necessary. A Spanish speaker is preferred. The incumbent will be required to enroll patients in clinical trials, analyze data for reports and publications, and provide community outreach in collaboration with the UA Cancer Center.

The successful candidate will demonstrate comfort in multitasking; possess customer service skills and be able to liaise with others throughout the College of Medicine; have organizational skills; and exhibit strong oral and written communication skills.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinate, monitor, or supervise the activities of subordinates, as required.
  • Collect, analyze and graph data; conclude research projects in a timely manner; and write reports, manuscripts and grants.
  • Assist the PI/coordinator with study setup and training.
  • Inventory and requisition supplies and equipment; arrange for repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Prioritize and coordinate meetings, conferences and appointments; make necessary travel reservations; prepare required documentation, including travel authorizations and reconciling travel expenses.
  • Liaison between the project team and funding agencies or significant parties.
  • Serve as initial point of contact to faculty, staff (academic and clinical), students, postdoctoral researchers, research collaborators, patients and outside agencies.
  • Approve, monitor and reconcile account expenditures within scope of authority.
  • Work with Department Business Office to monitor overall programmatic budget for grants, contracts, and gifts; determine effort allocations across funding types for research staff and budget development for grant proposals.
  • Coordinate and prioritize, with the Primary Investigator, key faculty research projects that will require submission for upcoming peer reviewed meetings and conferences.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of study supplies and oversee purchasing of research supplies within established guidelines and P-card policies.
  • Participate in research team meetings and other conferences, as necessary.
  • Review and develop a familiarity with the contract or award terms and conditions; work with the PI to assure that the study is in compliance with all terms and conditions, including but not limited to education, IRB approval, conflict of interest disclosure, health and safety protections for participants and staff and any financial terms or conditions.
  • Assist the PI in submission of accurate and timely closeout documents to applicable Federal agencies, University entities and the sponsoring agency in accordance with Federal regulation and University and sponsoring agency policies and procedures.

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarly with the University of Arizona and external (FDA, NIH) clinical research regulatory bodies, and experience with the use of electronic data capture systems.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of organizational practices.
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
