Position Summary

The University of Arizona has an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to begin or advance a career in contracting. As a Contract Analyst, you will be responsible for establishing relationships with outside sponsors by negotiating contracts with representatives of industry, federal and local governments, non-profit foundations, and other universities. The university enters into over 4,000 contracts per year with outside organizations to bring in support for its research, education, service and outreach activities. In this role, you will be responsible for working with faculty in areas such as space science, biomedical research, and environmental sciences to understand their needs, apply university policy, applicable regulations, and legal principles, and employ negotiating skills to successfully complete contracts. Starting salary for this position is $51,000 annually. Individuals with more experience in university-industry contracting than the below minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply. Salary offered will be commensurate with experience.

Contracting Services is a unit of Sponsored Projects & Contracting Services, operating within Research, Discovery & Innovation (RDI). We support the University of Arizona by negotiating the agreements that bring external funding and other forms of support to our community of researchers and educators. Contracting Services completes over 4,000 agreements per year. We have groups focused on government and non-profit contracting, industry contracting, and clinical trial contracting. We also provide training to faculty and departments regarding the contract process. Contracting Services is an experienced resource for faculty and staff who are engaged in research, education, service, and outreach, and who work to advance the University’s strategic goals through externally supported projects and programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Reviews, processes and negotiates assigned agreements.
• Works with the Office of General Counsel, Tech Launch Arizona, and other university administrative offices, as needed.
• Coordinates negotiations with internal stakeholders and sponsors.
• Reviews and negotiates terms and compliance requirements for funded and non-funded agreements
• Maintains a database to communicate the status of contracts and amendments.
• Coordinates with the University Export Control Office in the review of U.S. Export Control Regulations associated with agreements and subawards.
• Assists with the formulation of guidelines, procedures, and the development of templates and other agreement tools.
• Serve as campus resource for principal investigators, study personnel and other University officials in the agreement review process.
• Maintain knowledge of current developments in policy, laws, regulations and best practices regulating university agreements.
• Advise, assist and provide training to faculty and other study personnel about policies, procedures, forms, laws and regulations related to university agreements.
• Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Familiarity with common contractual terms and issues related to contracting in higher education.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, along with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse constituency.
• Ability to assess specific terms in the context of the entire agreement, making judgements on accepting risk in one area if it can be modulated by terms in another area.
• Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills, along with the ability to work within tight and conflicting deadlines.
• Demonstrated ability to be detailed oriented.
• Demonstrated ability to think quickly and effectively in verbal negotiations.
• Demonstrated ability to seek and affect successfully creative resolutions to contract issues.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical or business-related field AND three or more years’ experience in a university, legal, healthcare, or business environment in research administration, contracting, business development, or research management
OR
• An advanced degree such as an MS in a technical field, an MBA, or a JD and familiarity with contracting or university research administration.
