Position Summary

A technician position is available starting immediately in the Zarnescu laboratory in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. We research RNA based mechanisms and metabolic dysregulation in neurodegeneration using Drosophila and cell based models, and also seek to develop drug therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. The successful applicant is expected to perform lab managerial duties (35%) and research (65%). Basic laboratory skills are required for this position.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful applicant will have several responsibilities including:
1) Organizes supplies, materials or equipment and sets-up equipment for laboratory experiments; may perform minor equipment maintenance.
2) Maintains detailed records of controlled substances in the laboratory; packages waste material and arranges for disposal according to established procedures.
3) Operates laboratory and experimental equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges and balances; makes minor repairs and makes arrangements for major repairs to be performed.
4) Performs routine experiments and analyses, as requested. Compiles data and assists in routine preliminary analyses; maintains research data in laboratory notebook, writes summary reports and reports findings to principal investigator.
5) Performs clerical tasks such as inventories and requisitions supplies and materials.
6) Assists in training students working in the laboratory.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

1) Knowledge of the methods, materials and techniques used in laboratory and research work.
2) Knowledge of research and laboratory equipment appropriate to the area of the assignment.
3) Ability to effectively communicate.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

1) Background in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related field.
2) Experience performing research in a laboratory setting.
3) Familiarity with experimental methods such as western blotting and immunofluorescence.
4) Experience with basic molecular biology techniques, such as cloning, electrophoresis and PCR
5) Experience in laboratory maintenance including ordering supplies and maintaining a safe laboratory environment.
6) Experience in supervising and teaching at the lab bench in one-on-one interactions.
7) Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, and implement complex experimental approaches.
8) Ability to develop reports and present data in tabular, oral, written, and graphic formats
