The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Arizona seeks an established scholar with strong administrative experience who can provide energetic and visionary leadership as head of one of the largest departments of its kind in the country.

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a variety of academic programs. At the undergraduate level, students may specialize in Hispanic Linguistics, Hispanic Literature, Spanish and Portuguese, or Translation and Interpretation. At the graduate level, we offer degrees in Hispanic Linguistics, and literary and cultural studies of the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian world. The new department head, who is expected to be Professor of Spanish or Portuguese (open area of expertise) with tenure at the time of appointment, will be expected to be active in administration, teaching, and research. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is seeking candidates interested in working with diverse students, colleagues, and communities. The Department is also a leader in community outreach and study abroad programs. Its Portuguese program is one of the largest in the nation and its Heritage Learner Language Program is the largest in the nation. The University of Arizona has been recognized by the Department of Education as an Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution and the Department is actively committed to this mission. The head will report to the Dean of the College of Humanities and will work collaboratively with the Dean, the College Administrative team and the other heads and directors in the College in order to play an important role in shaping the humanities in the 21st century.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Exercise active oversight in consultation with the faculty over all administrative functions in the Department including, but not limited to, curriculum assessment and program development (including general education courses), recruitment of graduate and undergraduate students, faculty annual performance reviews and workload matters, budgetary decisions, and long-term strategic planning.
  • Forge interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaborations throughout the university and work innovatively with and on behalf of all departmental programs.
  • Encourage and support academic and professional development of the faculty, staff, and students.
  • Promote and encourage faculty in teaching courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Support and mentor junior faculty, especially in regard to promotion and tenure.
  • Foster innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement and increasing diversity.
  • Expanding collaborations with local, national, and international community and business partners.
  • Hold regular departmental meetings, attend all meetings of College heads and directors, and represent the Department at College, University, and community functions.
  • Work closely with the College of Humanities Dean, Associate Director of Development, Director of External & Alumni Relations, and UA Foundation with respect to fundraising and community engagement.
  • Maintain an active research agenda.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Strong written and verbal skills in English, and Spanish or Portuguese.
  • An earned doctorate in Spanish or Portuguese with scholarly credentials commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor at a Carnegie Research Intensive Institution.
  • Demonstrated ability and proven excellence in administrative and leadership roles at the department or college level.
  • Demonstrated administrative expertise in policies and procedures as relevant to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills and ability to articulate a strategic vision for the department.
  • A proven record of excellence in and commitment to teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success in managing all aspects of the budget of a large department.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting study abroad, outreach, basic languages, majors and minors, masters and doctoral programs.
  • Commitment to sustaining and expanding outreach to the local and statewide community, as part of the mission of the state‚Äôs only land-grant university.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity in the department and across all levels of the campus and the community. This would include an understanding of diversity in general and in the Southwest in particular.
  • Demonstrated success in attracting outside funding such as grants, endowments, private funding, and in cultivating relationships with donors.
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustaining and expanding the largest Spanish Heritage-learner program in the nation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustaining and expanding one of the largest Portuguese programs in the nation.
  • Demonstrated experience with graduate education, graduate assistants, and ability to adjust programs and visions to accommodate new professional trends, demands, and directions in the changing national environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in career placement for all students.
