Position Summary

The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson seeks an outstanding physician scholar and educator to serve as its next Chair, Department of Anesthesiology. This is a terrific opportunity to lead a well-established department and develop a cutting-edge model of care and research in partnership with the nation’s leading health system for accountable care.

The Chair will provide strategic and tactical leadership for all aspects of the Department of Anesthesiology within the College of Medicine – Tucson including corresponding anesthesia services at Banner – University Medicine’s Tucson facilities. The Chair will work collaboratively with the leaders of the College of Medicine and Banner University Medicine to build on excellence in existing teaching, team based research and clinical programs and to position the Department for growth and change related to health reform.

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Medicine – Tucson, the Chair is responsible for residency programs, fellowships and undergraduate medical education activities, the department’s research portfolio and the department’s clinical activities, including the delivery of high quality and cost effective care.

The UA College of Medicine is part of the University of Arizona Health Sciences, the statewide leader in biomedical research and health professions training, with over 1,000 faculty and $126 million in annual research grants and contracts. The UA Health Sciences includes the UA Colleges of Medicine (Phoenix and Tucson), Nursing, Pharmacy and the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, with main campus locations in Tucson and the growing Phoenix Biomedical Campus in downtown Phoenix. In February 2015, Banner Health merged with the University of Arizona Health Network in Tucson, Arizona, to form Banner – University Medicine. At the heart of this merger is academic medicine – research, teaching and patient care – across three academic medical centers in Tucson and Phoenix.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain and expand high quality clinical anesthesiology services and programs at Banner – University Medicine affiliated teaching hospitals and clinics such that the Department of Anesthesiology is recognized as a premier provider of anesthesia services in the region.
  • Provide leadership that promotes professional development of existing faculty members and attracts highly-motivated and exceptional faculty, staff and trainees to the Department. Ensure the Department is recruiting the best faculty and staff to meet its strategic goals.
  • Foster a culture of interdisciplinary research through collaboration with affiliated departments and centers, and expand an infrastructure that fosters research productivity.
  • Develop key institutional partnerships and strategic relationships, and define and pursue interdisciplinary clinical and research goals that align with University, College of Medicine, and Banner Health strategic goals.
  • Oversee departmental budgeting and resource management, meet departmental financial goals, and enact policies and processes which promote fiscal accountability and responsibility.
  • As the educational leader of the Department, ensure an excellent teaching program for the students, residents, and fellows who are receiving education and training within the Department.
  • Identify new and expand existing sources of funding, including extramural clinical and translational research grants, philanthropy and clinical revenue.
  • Monitor and consistently work to improve clinical quality.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the Department, both in the University, across Banner Health, and in the community.
  • Assure implementation of University policies pertaining to faculty governance and evaluation, and actively enhance diversity.
  • Be accountable for compliance with Joint Commission, Federal and State accreditation requirements, as well as compliance with University and College policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • M.D. or equivalent medical degree.
  • Board Certification in Anesthesiology required.
  • Ability to obtain licensure in Arizona required.
  • Must meet University of Arizona criteria for appointment to a tenured senior level faculty position.
  • Proven and substantial leadership experience is required, as is the ability to be a collaborative leader in a rapidly evolving model of care.
Preferred Qualifications
  • National/international reputation as a respected and accomplished researcher, clinician and educator.
  • Proven, substantial and progressive leadership achievement in an academic medical center.
  • Evidence of an astute understanding of academic clinical practice and a deep commitment to clinical excellence based on a patient-centered model of care.
  • Demonstrated understanding of finances in healthcare administration and academic medicine.
  • Evidence of success in developing a strong clinical program that recognizes and meets the needs of the various providers with whom the department works, those of the students that the department educates and trains, as well as those of the patients whom the department serves.
  • Record of success in mentoring and developing faculty, students and trainees, and supporting them in their academic, teaching and clinical endeavors.
  • Track record as a creative and strategic thinker who is able to envision and manage for the future.
  • Evidence of success in leading and developing excellent graduate medical education programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead teams, and to develop strong ties and connections with internal and external constituencies and individuals.
