Position Summary

Please Note: There was a minor update to the Duties & Responsibilities, and the Minimum Qualifications have been slightly modified. The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) seeks an experienced UA educator or researcher, to lead the Center’s Cancer Research Career Enhancement (CRE) and Related Activities efforts within the University of Arizona with approximately 10% FTE.

The incumbent will be given the Senior Leader title of Associate Director (AD) and participate in the Center’s Scientific Leadership and Executive Councils. This position provides protected administrative time for the AD CRE to shape the Center’s training and mentoring efforts for the next generation of cancer researchers. The AD, CRE will be tasked to devise new plans that will promote the Research Careers of Cancer Trainees and will integrate the Center’s mission within the University’s existing medical research training and mentoring plans.

The Cancer Center supports the UA’s diversity and inclusiveness strategic initiatives designed to create an inclusive environment for all faculty, staff, and students. The candidate is expected to support diversity and inclusiveness efforts in the department and college.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinate cancer research career enhancement activities related to the research education and training activities at the Cancer Center and provide additional educational opportunities by supporting travel to scientific meetings, scientific seminars, workshops and related activities.
  • Devise and implement specific strategies to recruit and support students and trainees from underserved populations.
  • Evaluate and suggest improvements to the Center’s Cancer Research Career Enhancement and Training activities.
  • Provide advice on the submission of K, R25, and/or T32 grants from the NIH.
  • Devise and integrate the Center’s mentorship plan with existing training programs of excellence active in other medical research departments at UA.
  • Author, present, and communicate plans, activities, and outcomes as needed, including those required by the competing CCSG application and associated NCI site visit, annual progress report, and annual EAB report and visit.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or equivalent and at least 8 years of research experience in a molecular, behavioral, or epidemiological area.
  • Experience in devising and leading medical research-related training and mentoring programs involving a variety of disciplines in the biomedical or biobehavioral research setting.
  • Extensive background in training and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students in a biomedical or biobehavioral research setting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Principal investigator (PI) or Multiple PI on large NIH training, mentoring, and education grants (R25, T32, or K series).
  • Experience devising training and mentoring programs in the biomedical and biobehavioral research field.
