Position Summary

The University of Arizona University Information Technology Services department is recruiting for a Communications Network Analyst. The position is responsible for installing, supporting, and maintaining the UA’s network and security infrastructure. The successful candidate will be tasked with installation and configuration of network security elements including firewalls, virtual private networks (VPN), intrusion detection systems, as well as with providing customer focused support necessary to ensure maximum availability.

The University of Arizona’s extensive network consists of over 2,000 routers and switches. The network core was recently upgraded with new Cisco equipment and is running at 100Gps. The wireless network has over 9000 AP’s and is one of the largest deployments on U.S. college campuses. The candidate will utilize industry best practices to provide guidance and expertise related to network security, both internally and to network managers in other UA departments.

The Infrastructure Team is a group of highly-technical and analytical individuals who are responsible for functioning autonomously, but also as a collaborative team member. The team is seeking an additional member who is detail-oriented, driven and energetic about network technology to fulfill the goals of the department.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Maintains network security infrastructure, hardware, software, services and configuration including upgrades.
• Operates communications network facilities, including links, routing and switching systems, firewalls and network monitoring and control facilities. Monitors network use.
• Analyzes and troubleshoots network and security systems and supports users in resolving network malfunctions. Coordinates activities with other technical staff.
• Support and maintain network security-related shell scripts
• Creates and maintains required documentation regarding network hardware and software installation and maintenance.
• Instructs and assists new users in accessing network systems.
• Ensures that all trouble tickets and work orders are done in a timely manner
• Ensure network stability and availability through the use of monitoring and reporting tools
• Act as primary responder to Tier-2 network requests and triaging potential network events.
• Interface with NOC personnel, technicians, network managers and IT personnel, and provide
• Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for network and security emergencies.
• Assume and perform other duties and responsibilities not specifically outlined herein, but which are logically and properly inherent to the position

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Prior experience implementing and supporting Cisco networking environment, preferably in a higher education setting
• Knowledge of the principles, operation and capabilities of current high-speed communications network hardware, software and protocols
• Familiarity with linux-based scripting and basic programming e.g. in Perl, shell scripting, etc.
• Understanding of network monitoring and reporting tools and metrics
• Skill in effectively communicating technical subjects both orally and in writing
• Possesses a desire to learn and share information within a strong team environment.

Three years of experience installing, operating or maintaining communications network hardware or software; OR, Associates degree in Computer Information Technology or related field AND two years of experience installing, operating or maintaining communications network hardware or software; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Communications System Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field, AND one year of experience with high speed circuit or packet switched data networks; OR two years of communication system design, implementation, operation or maintenance experience which includes experience with high speed circuit or packet switched data networks OR any equivalent combination of experience, training and /or education.
