Position Summary

Ophthalmology and Vision Science basic research laboratory seeks a Research/Laboratory Assistant to assist in basic retinal cell biology research. The research is in the subject of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), and requires knowledge of of ocular cell biology, protein chemistry and basic disease processes of the aging eye.

The Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science at The University of Arizona serves to provide education, research, and service throughout the Southwest. We educate medical students, residents, fellows and other professionals in the most advanced techniques available for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of eye disease. Our research identifies and investigates new methods to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate and prevent conditions that cause vision impairment and blindness. Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the activities of student workers.
  • Perform standard laboratory procedures such as maintaining cell cultures requiring the use of sterile technique, processing tissue samples and preparing slides using staining techniques.
  • Compile data and assists in routine preliminary analyses; maintain research data in laboratory notebook, write summary reports and report findings to investigator.
  • Collect samples or data and performs lab analysis and/or quantifies and tabulates results.
  • Assist with basic mathematical and statistical analyses.
  • Dissect animals to collect retina and RPE tissue.
  • Operate laboratory and experimental equipment such as microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, analytical balances, photometers and spectrometers; make minor repairs and make arrangements for major repairs to be performed.
  • Organize supplies, materials or equipment and sets-up equipment for laboratory experiments or demonstrations; may perform minor equipment maintenance.
  • Order chemicals, reagents, and supplies to maintain an active laboratory team.
  • Follow established procedures to prepare solutions, media and reagents using arithmetical calculations for measuring; perform library research to find appropriate procedures, as required.
  • Clean glassware and other laboratory equipment or materials using appropriate standards; keep laboratory area clean.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as filing, typing, labeling and billing; inventory and requisition supplies and materials.
  • Assist in training Research/Laboratory Glassware Attendants and/or students working in the laboratory.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject Ophthalmology.
  • Knowledge of handling ocular tissue, human and model organism, production of ‘tissue-type’ retinal pigment epithelium cultures and retinal explants.
  • Knowledge and skill in protein chemistry. Recombinant protein expression purification and analysis. Antibody purification.
