Position Summary

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health invites applicants for the position of Tenure-Eligible Assistant Professor in Epidemiology. Faculty in the Epidemiology program currently have expertise in epidemiological methods research, infectious diseases, and chronic diseases. Well-established research programs in cancer include understanding links with nutrition, environmental exposures, and prevention and control strategies. There is a growing initiative in OneHealth that encompasses infectious diseases including hospital-acquired infections, vector-borne diseases, and food-borne illnesses. Some faculty are involved in the Women’s Health Initiative, a long-standing cohort, with a focus on aging, and genetic determinants of metabolic disorders, including diabetes. Other areas of expertise include maternal child health and developmental disabilities, including autism, and determinants of heart disease.

The University of Arizona is a large research one institution and one of 62 distinguished institutions included as a member of the Association of American Universities. Situated in the desert southwest close to the U.S.-Mexico border, it provides a unique setting for investigations in one of the only arid regions in the United States. The UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health is currently the only nationally accredited college of public health in the state of Arizona. The College has active teaching, research and service programs. In addition to extensive collaboration within the College itself, faculty in the College collaborate with the College of Medicine, the University of Arizona Cancer Center, the Arizona Respiratory Center, the College of Pharmacy, Microbiology, Engineering, Mining, Institute of the Environment, Mexican American Studies, the Water Research and Resource Center, the School of Natural Resources, the College of Agriculture, and others. The College is an active partner in regional multi-disciplinary, community-based research projects addressing health issues relative to border communities and underserved indigenous populations. The Department has 20 faculty in either the epidemiology or biostatistics programs. Faculty engage in a broad range of research and are responsible for teaching students from a number of educational programs. The epidemiology program offers PhD, MS and MPH degrees that are completed on campus, and an innovative online MPH program has recently been implemented. In addition, the recently-launched OneHealth MPH is housed within the epidemiology program. The development of a new undergraduate program is currently underway.

The successful candidate is expected to develop and teach the equivalent of three 3 credit courses per year including graduate-level and undergraduate courses, mentor graduate students, and contribute to the research and service missions of the college. Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and teach epidemiology courses.
  • Supervise Masters and Doctoral students in the epidemiology program.
  • Develop and maintain an externally funded research program in epidemiology and participate in collaborative research with other departments and programs at the University of Arizona.
  • Participate in intramural, extramural and outreach service.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD, MD, or equivalent degree, with advanced training in epidemiology.
  • Knowledge of and research experience in a focused area of epidemiology with evidence of excellence in developing an independent research capability.
  • Some teaching experience in a classroom environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Public health research experience in diverse populations and underserved communities.
  • Record of high-quality scientific productivity.
