Position Summary

The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson is seeking an experienced, highly motivated, team-oriented communications professional to serve as its Director of Communications.

As the Director of Communications for one of the UA’s largest, most impactful colleges, the incumbent will be responsible for leading the Dean’s external and internal communications programs in a fast-paced, highly interactive and collaborative team environment.

Celebrating its 50th year of innovation in 2017, the UA College of Medicine – Tucson provides state-of-the-art medical education programs, groundbreaking research, statewide outreach and leading-edge patient care. Founded on the UA campus in 1967 as the state’s only MD degree granting college and a resource for the people of Arizona, today the UA College of Medicine – Tucson has an international impact. From an initial class of just 32 students, the College today has graduated more than 3,400 physicians.

The UA College of Medicine – Tucson’s integrated, multidisciplinary curriculum combines the latest advances in biomedical science with the practice of the classical art of medicine. Duties & Responsibilities
  • External/Internal Communications: Responsible for planning and executing both external and internal communications for the Dean and leadership team, as well as developing communication strategies and plans to communicate effectively the College’s vision, mission and activities to relevant and specific audiences.
  • Create Compelling Written Materials: Work with the Dean and his leadership team; responsible for planning, drafting and editing, compelling written materials for public and internal dissemination, including news releases and media advisories, opinion pieces; and, as needed, internal newsletters; memos; presentations; brochures, publications, among other materials.
  • Executive Communications: Provide support to the Dean and College Executive Leadership Team via a wide range of executive communications and messaging – talking points, presentations, media training, among other services.
  • Media Relations: Work with University of Arizona Health Sciences (UAHS) Public Affairs; pitch impactful College of Medicine – Tucson stories to news media outlets and monitor College media placements and metrics.
  • Oversee Video Production: Work with UAHS BioCommunications and other Health Sciences offices, as appropriate, oversees production of concise, impactful videos for internal and external audiences, with the goal to better tell the UA College of Medicine – Tucson story in a compelling way.
  • Liaison to UAHS Public Affairs: Work closely with UA and UAHS Public Affairs, and participate in biweekly UAHS communications staff meetings as well as Main Campus communications and marketing/brand management team meetings.
  • Develop/Oversee Communications Planning: Ensure all communications materials comply with appropriate UA brand guidelines, voice and messaging for specific audiences, including news media, alumni, donors, faculty, staff, students, government and community entities, industry and others.
  • Supervise Student Staff: Direct student employees on various communications efforts.
  • There may be additional duties assigned as it relates to this position.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in Media Relations, Public Relations, Social Media, Marketing/Communications or related field.
  • A minimum of five years of professional writing, communications and/or editing experience.
  • A minimum of two years project-management experience, including evidence of ability to manage several high-priority projects simultaneously in a high-volume environment, meeting budgets and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing/Communications or related field.
  • Supervisory and managerial experience in Media Relations, Public Relations, Marketing/Communications.
  • Two years of experience in higher education and/or academic medicine.
  • Advanced skills/experience in planning and executing strategic communications, such as brand messaging, media campaigns and crisis/issues management.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents and diverse groups of colleagues in a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in branding and positioning expertise.
  • Has a passion for the mission of the College and academic medicine in general.
  • Capacity to respond to and manage crisis situations and to communicate clearly and accurately about complex and/or sensitive issues.
  • Excellent judgment, impeccable integrity and reliability and high ethical standards, as well as flexibility and an engaging interpersonal style.
