Position Summary

The University of Arizona Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management / Academic Initiatives & Student Success (SAEM / AISS) is committed to the recruitment, retention, and academic and personal success of UA students. Located in the Phoenix metropolitan area, the Associate Director of Development assists the Director of Development and other members of the SAEM/AISS Development team in planning and implementing all development activities. In addition, the Associate Director of Development will work directly with major gift prospects to secure gifts of $25,000 or more in support of SAEM/AISS units with a main focus on the Launch Pad Fundraising Initiative. This position is jointly managed by the Senior Vice President for SAEM/AISS and the University Development Program (UDP), which is managed under contract by the University of Arizona Foundation (UAF).

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Focus the vast majority of time and effort on personal cultivation and solicitation of major donor prospects.
  • Develop and actively manage a portfolio of 75-100 assigned prospects for major gifts ($25,000 and greater), and leadership annual gifts ($2,500 and greater). This position has an annual fundraising goal of $500,000 and greater.
  • Plans, coordinates, and schedules 100-120 personal visits annually with parents, alumni and other donor prospects.
  • Qualifies major gift donors and prospects.
  • Develops a personalized strategy for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of each assigned prospect and donor.
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate records of donor prospect contacts in the Raiser’s Edge computer records system.
  • Prepare SAEM / AISS development communications, including but not limited to, marketing materials, case statements, gift proposals, lists of gift and naming opportunities, endowment gift agreements, and gift stewardship reports to donors.
  • Attend University Development Program (UDP) meetings and SAEM / AISS meetings as requested.
  • Travels regularly statewide to meet with donors and/or attend special events.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Excellent writing, speaking, interviewing and listening skills (demonstrated competence in the English language and grammar).
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain powerful and productive relationships with donors as well as development colleagues and UA faculty and staff.
  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Working knowledge of the ways donors can make charitable gifts, including cash, appreciated securities, real and personal property, and different planned giving methods.
  • Ability to translate technical scientific information into lay language for potential donors.
  • Ability to understand and work with budgetary procedures and policies.
  • Ability to make introductory phone call to get appointment with donor prospects.
  • Ability to make good decisions and exercise judgement and discretion.
  • Ability to maintain donor confidentiality.
  • Facility with modern communication and office equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • At least three (3) years of major gift development experience in higher education and/or the nonprofit sector, or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license upon first day of employment and the ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
  • Demonstrated success in a fundraising capacity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising principles and procedures.
  • Experience successfully working within budgetary procedures, policies and restrictions.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Must be available to work evening and/or weekend as necessary
  • Must be able to work and travel during evenings and weekends to meet with donors and/or attend special events and meetings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and interest in the units within SAEM / AISS.
  • Capital campaign experience.
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Raisers Edge fundraising system.
