Position Summary

The University of Arizona Libraries (UAL) is reimagining its strategic planning and assessment approaches, applying design thinking principles as we establish more responsive, user-centered methods to this work. Our assessment program will be critical as we evaluate the impact of our services and resources on student success, the University’s research enterprise, and our community engagement as a land grant institution. Our refreshed approach leads us to recruit an enterprising, creative, and engaged Librarian/Specialist to lead and coordinate our assessment efforts.

The Assessment and Analytics Librarian/Specialist coordinates, expands, and enhances assessment and data analytics activities across UAL. The person in this position plays a key role in strategic planning, ensuring the Libraries’ alignment with University of Arizona priorities. S/he gathers and provides compelling evidence of the critical contributions the Libraries make to the academic, research and outreach missions of the University. S/he works in partnership with all UAL departments, and with campus, regional and national entities, to lead evidence-based assessment initiatives to achieve strategic objectives and inform decision-making related to all aspects of Libraries work. That work posits the user experience and the success of our clients at the center of our efforts.

This is a continuing-eligible or continuing track, academic professional position. Incumbents are members of the general faculty and are entitled to all accompanying rights and privileges granted by the Arizona Board of Regents and the University of Arizona. Duties & Responsibilities

The Librarian/Specialist:

  • Collaborates with our leadership teams (Deans Working Group and Cabinet) to align assessment efforts with UAL strategic planning;
  • Represents UAL to UA Assessment Leadership Team; works in close partnership with other campus groups engaged in assessment and related analytics work, including but not limited to University of Arizona University Analytics and Institutional Research and the Office of Instruction and Assessment;
  • In partnership with leaders throughout UAL (deans, department heads, managers), collects the necessary evidence to make informed decisions related to the deployment and allocation of resources, including personnel capacity;
  • Synthesizes the results of assessment efforts to convey and illustrate, in compelling fashion, the impact of library services and resources on constituencies and in advancement of UA priorities;
  • Presents and visualizes quantitative data in a way that is meaningful to stakeholders; uses qualitative data to foster empathy for our users and to tell the library’s story;
  • Uses gathered data to recommend improvements to library offerings, increasing their impact and improving the student and faculty experience;
  • Leads the implementation and evaluates the use of both internal and externally-sourced surveys and related macro-level assessment instruments (NSSE, IPEDS, LibQual, MINES for Libraries, ClimateQual, etc.);
  • Designs, plans for, and implements assessment strategies (e.g. focus groups, surveys, contextual inquiry, transactional data gathering);
  • Promotes and shares expertise in assessment and data analysis with library staff in an ongoing program to encourage a culture of assessment, empathy, and data-informed decision making throughout UAL;
  • Proactively seeks out and implements new methods of assessment to better guide strategic planning and decision making;
  • Coordinates internal communication regarding assessment efforts;
  • Partners with user experience staff to prioritize user research efforts and update user personas based on data;
  • Provides consultations and support for library staff engaged in assessment work (e.g. identifying and clarifying assessment priorities, goals and objectives, and methodologies; strategies for data collection, management, analysis and preservation);
  • Conducts training and creates learning opportunities for library staff in the gathering, use and dissemination of assessment data and related information;
  • Establishes ethical practices regarding gathering and storing of personal data related to assessment; oversees the gathering, deposition and preservation of data in standardized formats and their uploading to and maintenance in preservations systems;
  • Represents UAL to tri-university assessment efforts (Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University);
  • Develops and maintains Libraries dashboards, including data and graphical interfaces;
  • The University Libraries supports the UA’s diversity and inclusiveness strategic initiatives designed to create an inclusive environment for all faculty, staff, and students. The candidate is expected to support diversity and inclusiveness efforts in the department and college, and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of assessment trends and tools available to and commonly used by academic research libraries.
  • Successful experience in assessment and data representation in academic research library environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbal. Ability to interact effectively with clients, colleagues, campus administrators, and community leaders.
  • Working knowledge of statistical software applications used for analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Experience designing and organizing assessment initiatives, and the ability to convey data/evidence in a compelling and creative fashion.
  • Knowledge of student success and learning outcomes assessment in academic libraries.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative and inclusive environment, one that values and leverages the benefits of diverse perspectives.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or relevant advanced degree.
  • Knowledge of and experience providing assessment and analytics services.
  • Demonstrated experience with data analysis and organization.
  • Certification and/or academic coursework in research design and methodology.
  • Evidence of the ability to achieve continuing status (equivalent to tenure), including contributing to the information/library profession and to fulfilling the responsibilities of a library faculty member through service and scholarship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Successful leadership of a library assessment program with commensurate experience.
  • Experience with national library assessment programs (LibQual, ClimateQual, IPEDS, NSSE, etc.).
  • Experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and approaches to assessment (usability testing, ethnography, survey design, evaluation design, etc.).
  • Demonstrated success in coordinating and leading project management efforts in a frequently changing environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in ACRL Proficiencies for Assessment Librarians and Coordinators.
  • Experience in training, facilitation, and collaborative decision making.
