Position Summary

The Research Specialist, Senior is a full time position in the Valley Fever Center for Excellence (VFCE) with the responsibility of conducting experiments to develop vaccine candidate formulations with the goal of preventing Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis) in dogs and humans. This position will perform laboratory research studying the fungus coccidioides immitis and coccidioides posadasii.

The VFCE has received a four-year federal award to study the mechanism of immunity for Valley Fever that is generated by the vaccine that the Research Specialist, Senior will assist with.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and validate assays to support growth kinetics/characterization, process development, formulation stability and host animal responses.
  • Ensure SOPs, protocols, and laboratory procedures are followed.
  • Project budgets and procure general laboratory supplies and research equipment.
  • Perform skilled procedures, tests and/or analyses as required.
  • Maintain detailed records of information necessary for complete accounting of all laboratory activities related to select agent C. posadasii and C. immitis.
  • Perform critical support functions for multiple projects requiring growth of Coccidioides spp.
  • Develop and update protocols including new techniques or changes in supplies or reagents that will increase efficacy without compromising personnel safety as appropriate for research with C. posadasii and C. immitis.
  • Develop new SOPs as appropriate.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Skill in microbiology laboratory techniques.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of working with fungal pathogens.
  • Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analysis and skill in their application.
  • Understanding of the mechanisms and life cycle of C. posadasii and C. immitis.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating data.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three years of related research experience; OR, bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment and four years of related research experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Willingness and ability for occasional travel to support vaccine production.
  • Industrial Microbiology experience.
  • Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
