Position Summary

The Pathway Scholars Program (PSP) is for Arizona residents who desire to pursue a career in medicine. The program is designed for students who have experienced unique or greater than average challenges in preparing to become competitive medical school applicants. Consideration will be given to Arizona Residents that are:

  • Socioeconomically disadvantaged.
  • First generation college attendees.
  • From rural Arizona.
  • Members of Federally recognized American Indian Tribes.
  • Committed to serving the under-served and diverse populations of Arizona.

The purpose of this program is to prepare students — who possess qualities that would make them superb physicians, but lack the refined skills necessary — to succeed in medical school. Students work with a dedicated Learning Specialist to personalize a learning plan tailored to individual academic needs and strengths. The program incorporates academic support, clinical experience, leadership development and modified medical school coursework to equip students with the skill set necessary to thrive in the College of Medicine – Phoenix curriculum.

Upon successful completion of the PSP, students will be granted a Graduate Certificate in “Professional Studies in Health Sciences” and, if the student has met set milestones and competencies, will matriculate into the College of Medicine – Phoenix.

This hire will be to coordinate and instruct basic science content with clinical science content.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop content and provide instruction in foundational basic science for the following topics areas: Biochemistry, Myosis & Genetics, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Immunology
  • Provide instruction in foundational pathophysiology for the following topic areas: Musculoskeletal System & Skin, Nervous System, Respiratory System, Endocrine System, Cardiovascular System, Lymphatic System, Excretory System, Reproductive and Development System and the Digestive System
  • Coordinate and recommend basic science content for the Clinical Application Sessions.
  • Develops and implements course materials, session learning objectives, and course examinations for Principles of Organ Systems I and Principles of Organ Systems II.
  • Instruct basic science content for Principles of Organ Systems I Principles of Organ Systems II and Clinical Application Sessions
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and instructors to provide optimum learning opportunities for students.
  • Develop and manage supplemental instruction sessions applicable to foundational basic science and pathophysiology coursework
  • Participates in program development, planning and implementation.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Excellent oral communication skills to facilitate cooperative and effective interactions with students, staff, and faculty at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent presentation skills, including use of PowerPoint
  • Excellent Excel spreadsheet, Word and other Microsoft office skills.
  • Excellent writing skills, including the demonstrated ability to produce professional correspondence, proposals, and reports, using word processing or other innovative computer applications to deliver educational programs to students in a variety of ways.
  • Strong organizational skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD Degree Or appropriate terminal; professional degree AND scholarship in the discipline of instruction.
  • Have achievements commensurate with doctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated success and fluency in student risk determinants and success.
  • Experience in overseeing program development, coordination and delivery of effective student learning services.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse student, faculty, and administrative populations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of medical school curriculum requirements or higher
    education setting.
  • Certified Instructor and teaching experience.
  • Current faculty title or eligible for faculty title with The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix.
